Windows Server Update Services is now available for (free) download at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/downloads/WSUS.mspx

I've tested it a little bit and it's a good improvement over SUS but can't compete with fee-based solutions.

Also, Microsoft is opening up the Office 2003 XML Reference Schemas, see http://www.microsoft.com/office/xml/default.mspx

So, we'll need to get going on the XML-support. The Microsoft files are ZIP-compressed, thus for KiXtart manipulation one must unZIP first.

ROFLMAO

Microsoft was trying to give the Danish Government accolades for moving in this direction on some of their projects... but it would appear the site was unable to handle the hits and appears to be offline at the moment.

This is big news for developers.

Here Brian Jones, program manager on the Microsoft Word team, talks all about what it means.

This is a HUGE change for the Office team. For the first time the default file format will be open and accessible by anyone.

Brian gives us a demo of how you will be able to look inside the new file format at 19:30.

So, what was announced?

Word, Excel, and Powerpoint will get a new file format all based on XML.

The extensions will change from .DOC, .XLS, .PPT to .DOCX, .XLSX, .PPTX.

The new file format is actually enclosed in a ZIP file. Change the extension name to .ZIP and you'll be able to double-click and get access to all the pieces of the new format (Brian in his demo shows what it looks like).

The new file format will be usable on existing versions of Office.

And, as extra icing on the cake, Brian Jones is now blogging as well.

20 minute video about the new format

Altova - XML applications

They even have a couple of freeware applications that you need to register with them to get a key, but at no cost.

The WSUS looks promissing, i have downloaded it and the docs. and plan to install it next week (It can coexist with existing SUS servers)

Doc, I wonder where you found the Danish link , but I'm sure lots of things will happen in this area

Ja, but can it coexist with a web server or MSP2 server on the same box running on IIS port 80? I was thinking of installing it on my MSP2 server but am afraid of breaking it.

Get VMWare if you want to play around with stuff, or Microsoft Virtual PC, it's worth the 100-odd dollars.

Now, creating a full development environment within VMWare is another story and unfortunately, company policy prevents me from going into details

Well not for Microsoft. They have a white paper that goes into creating an entire forest on the same host system with Virtual Server. I think VMware can do it also, but have not done so myself yet.

you should never blindly trust MS.

Les,

I believe it can coexist on the same box, as long as you have the diskspace nessesary + 34 G.

The port is configurable so you dont have to use port 80 on WSUS, i have only read the docs once, but i think one alternate port 6??? is allready given by the install GUI

WSUS can be installed on a separate port/site.

The new WSUS kicks major butt and meets most needs for patch management I think... GUI, Logging, BITS, infrastructure, grouping etc etc.. everything's changed in it for the better.
