Using AD.

Does anyone know of a Win2K utility that will create a report of all rights assigned to folders on a Win2k server?
I will be moving a ton of folders from a win2k server to another win2k server. I will need to setup the rights to users and groups on the new server and I really don't want to have to hand record all of them before the move. Novell Netware had a command line utility to do this. How about Win2K?

I think that SCOPY copies files/folders including the security descriptors.

might be a little of base here but have you considered running the robocopy from reskit?

with it you may copy the rights...

I mainly have experience with NT servers but the NT resource kit has several utilities to help with this & presumably the Win2000 resource kit has simular utilities. I believe there are 3rd party utilities to do this as well.

I suspect you could do it in Kixtart as well but the last time I did it I think that Iused scopy & robocopy from the resource kit.

Kathy, are you using local groups on each of the servers or are you only using global groups on your file system?

If you are using global groups, then using robocopy in two passes is the best option. The first pass use the /CREATE option. Then on the second pass use the /SEC option to copy security.

If you are using local groups on each server, I can help you migrate your security from oldServer local groups to newServer local groups if you keep the names of the local groups the same on both servers.

If you truly just want to report and then reconstruct your security, then you should look into DumpSec.exe from SomarSoft.

http://somarsoft.com/ It's FREE.

If you are moving a large numberr of shares between servers you will also have to export the share info in the registry from the orginating server & then import this into the receiving server.

If you wish to save yourself some trouble, you can use xcopy to copy the files and set the acl and ownership properties. The /O option is the one you want to look at. Below is a listing of xcopy /?. Sorry if the formatting makes it hard to read.

XCOPY source [destination] [/A | /M] [/D[:date]] [/P] [/S [/E]] [/V] [/W]
[/C] [/I] [/Q] [/F] [/L] [/H] [/R] [/T] [/U]
[/K] [/N] [/O] [/X] [/Y] [/-Y] [/Z]
[/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...]

source Specifies the file(s) to copy.
destination Specifies the location and/or name of new files.
/A Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
doesn't change the attribute.
/M Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
turns off the archive attribute.
/D:m-d-y Copies files changed on or after the specified date.
If no date is given, copies only those files whose
source time is newer than the destination time.
/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...
Specifies a list of files containing strings. When any of the
strings match any part of the absolute path of the file to be
copied, that file will be excluded from being copied. For
example, specifying a string like \obj\ or .obj will exclude
all files underneath the directory obj or all files with the
.obj extension respectively.
/P Prompts you before creating each destination file.
/S Copies directories and subdirectories except empty ones.
/E Copies directories and subdirectories, including empty ones.
Same as /S /E. May be used to modify /T.
/V Verifies each new file.
/W Prompts you to press a key before copying.
/C Continues copying even if errors occur.
/I If destination does not exist and copying more than one file,
assumes that destination must be a directory.
/Q Does not display file names while copying.
/F Displays full source and destination file names while copying.
/L Displays files that would be copied.
/H Copies hidden and system files also.
/R Overwrites read-only files.
/T Creates directory structure, but does not copy files. Does not
include empty directories or subdirectories. /T /E includes
empty directories and subdirectories.
/U Copies only files that already exist in destination.
/K Copies attributes. Normal Xcopy will reset read-only attributes.
/N Copies using the generated short names.
/O Copies file ownership and ACL information.
/X Copies file audit settings (implies /O).
/Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/-Y Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/Z Copies networked files in restartable mode.

The switch /Y may be preset in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.

As I remember, with ROBOCOPY, there is a /SEC switch to copy your ACL List from one server to another.

I haven't worked with ROBOCOPY ...

Reason for posting was to say, that there are more
than one tools to do this job.

...Kathy will chose the best, I think.

I think there's a util... [Big Grin]

Hehe.. anyhow, I'm also writing a little script for this. Doing a
code:
SHELL '%COMSPEC% /C $Robocopy "$SourceShare\$UserID" "$TargetShare\$UserID" /CREATE /E /NP /R:3 /SEC /V /W:5 /Z >"$RoboPreLog"'

followed by a
code:
SHELL '%COMSPEC% /C $Robocopy "$SourceShare\$UserID" "$TargetShare\$UserID" /E /NP /R:3 /SEC /V /W:5 /Z >"$RoboLog"'

ps, do NOT use the /CREATE switch if there's already files in the destination folder.. it will report errors then. I also want to check/recreate the shares too (only move files and folders that have a share and an existing domain account)... but I'm having probs with the damned rmtshare.exe, who gives me "The command failed: 998" (think 998 is perms, but I have domain admin perms...) :/

There's a utility [Big Grin]

Actually, one could also use NTBACKUP.EXE or any other backup software [Smile]
