Anyone out there tonight that knows their way around ARCserve 2000 using the velocis engine?

I've read the techdoc http://support.ca.com/techbases/as2000/as2k-1521.html and moved all the rAAA* and rdm.* files out of the database folder. Then I'm running the CLI tools against the DBs.

First with the dbcheck util but it bombed on asobject, stopping the database engine.

Then I restarted the engine and tried it out on astpsdat. The damn thing crawls, finding error after error so I ctrl-c to stop it and figure may as well forget about checking further since I already know it's toast.

So I switch to dbfix astpsdat and the damn thing has been chugging for hours. No idea how much longer it may go and I still have asobject to deal with.

In the past, I've given up on fixing and just ended up re-init'ing the DBs. Having a grey hair moment here... can't remember what these two DBs hold so not sure what I would lose.

Any thoughts?

OK, so no ARCserve fans out there tonight eh. How about ARCserve loathers? You know... misery does love company.

I put my order in for Brightstor ARCserve 9 and got my license certificate today. No media however. Wonder if it is actually shipping?

I'm not in any real hurry for the media since we are talking a .0 release. Anyone taking bets on what release and SP level it will be stable?

Can't help you with Exchange there bud, as I run a Notes/Domino shop. Do have the ARCserve Notes agent working though. Had some trouble with it about a week ago. Darn thing ran fine for months and then decided to quit. Shoehorned in SP4 and some hotfixes and it's back in business.

Well, if I can get past this DB rebuild anyway.

Well, I should have just toasted the DB and reinit'd...
The damn repair is still going! This is like 36 hours now!

And when (if?) it ends, I still don't know if there will be much of anyting left of value. Oh well, I wanted to to actually see this process through so I know what to expect.

You can expect a blank database [Eek!]

Hmmm... Our Florida guys used Arc Serve and had problems for years. We finally got them to use BackupExec and that worked great for them while we were on stand-alone NT4 hardware. Now that were on Windows 2000 and SAN hardware we keep having issues as well with BackupExec

Guess no one has flawless backup software. [Frown]

I've got VNC running on my backup server and look in on it from time to time. Suddenly now, the DB engine is pushing the CPU to 100% and it's been stuck on the same record.

Oh well, may as well kick the plug... there's 36 hours wasted. If memory serves, astpsdat holds all the tape details. If a restore is needed, the tape detail can be merged back in.

Haven't seen the problems overhere;

Running Arcserve 6.5 / 6.61 / 2000 with backup agents for openfiles / oracle agents / exchange agents...

What does CAI say about this??? Have you called them...

Lligetfa,

ummm.

As the database access is slow, it sounds to me [as your subject line says] as though the ARCserve databases have been corrupted. Try reinitialising them, or have you done this already?

Lonkero,

I am running ARCserve 2000 with the MS Exchange 2000 agent without a problem.

What errors are you getting? What version of Exchange are you running?

Just a few comments about BackupExec. I've used this in the past, albeit a version or two ago, and I really didn't like it. Within weeks I went back to ARCserve!

Having said that Computer Associates Technical Support website is absolutely sh1te! You tell it you are using ARCserve 2000 and then run a search and the search results give you information on a whole range of products.

I like the ARCserve product, but CAI's website and documentation are bad!

Lee

As I had intimated in my last post, I ended up kicking the plug on the DB engine. On reboot, I reinit'd the DB and it went on its merry way. I've had to do this several times over the last couple of years.

CA techs say I should be performing weekly mtce an the DBs (as per the URL above) but that's a load of crap.

I'm thinking that when I go to Brightstor 9, that I may try using SQL instead of their wonky engine. Any thoughts?

Les,

Don't have much experience with ArcServe.. I just know Veritas is a pain in the ...! Especially, when they try to backup all servers on one Windows box (including UNIX!)

'Nuff said.

Well, there's a saying "better the devil you know than the devil you don't" so guess I'm sticking with Brightstor for now. I have AD on the horizon as a challenge and may be putting in a SAN in about a year so wonder how 'Bright' [Cool] the future will be.
