Several of the moderators feel that there is a problem relating to our KiXtart FAQ. A significant number of new users of our bulletin board do not seem to realize that the FAQ exists or how to use it.

The board contains 2 FAQs: the first is the bulletin board FAQ and the link for this FAQ is in the header at the top center-right of the board sections related to forums. This FAQ explains all the subtle ins and outs of inputting information and questions into the forums. Members developed the 2nd FAQ and it relates to KiXtart only. It is a trouble shooting and how-to guide for KiXtart. This is the last forum listed and is simply called “FAQ”.

The moderators of the FAQ forum believe that having 2 links called “FAQ” on the same page but leading to 2 very different types of FAQs is confusing for new users & causes some to miss our How-to guides. A number of cosmetic changes have been proposed to alleviate the problem. Below is a link to these discussions. If you find some of the questions below mystifying then a review of this topic is recommended.

Link to the Discussion

The discussions led to a general consensus that a change was necessary but there was less agreement on what the change should be. Following is a poll asking your opinion on what to change. Even though I set it up so you can leave some questions unanswered, please try to answer all the questions. Even if you vote for no change, you might be in the minority & thus responding to subsequent questions on your choice for change might be important. Remember you can not re-vote or change your votes after you finish the poll.

I hope that all users including new visitors will vote not just the moderators. These changes are intended to help new visitors. Please feel free to give comments but I prefer that you add them to the original topic so all comments will be in the same thread. Here is the link.

Before you start you may wish to review question. Here is a summary of the poll.

1. Do you think there is a problem with the naming of the FAQ links? If you think everything is just fine and you had no trouble finding the correct FAQ then just choose “no”. (Y/N)
2. Do you think we should rename the link for the bulletin board FAQ on how to use the BBS? (Y/N)
3. If we re-name the link for the bulletin board FAQ what should be the new name? (The current name is “FAQ”) You can only make 1 choice.
· UBBFAQ
· UBB FAQ
· Bulletin Board FAQ
· I don’t like any of the above choices
4. Should we rename the KiXtart FAQ? (Y/N)
5. If we rename the KiXtart FAQ what should be the new name? (The current name is “FAQ”) You can only make 1 choice.
· KiXtart FAQ and How-To’s
· FAQ and How-To’s
· I don’t like either of the above choices
6. Should we add extra links pointing to the KiXtart FAQ? In this question you can agree with all the choices or none. Thus you can suggest adding 2 extra links or choose none and leave things as they are.
· We should place an extra link in the header at the top of the forum page saying “KiXtart FAQ” (or whatever was chosen in question 5).
· Place a link inside the “UBB FAQ” pointing to the “KiXtart FAQ”.
· Place a link on the KiXtart.org homepage the “KiXtart FAQ”.
7. Should we add an extra link pointing to the Bulletin Board FAQ inside the “KiXtart FAQ” pointing to the “UBB FAQ”? (Y/N)
8. On the forums page there is similar confusion concerning the “Scripts” forum and the “KiXtart Scripts” link in the footer. These link to 2 different places. Do you think we should rename “KiXtart Scripts” in the footer to “KiXtart.org Home”.

I have a lot of trouble getting this poll setup properly & I am sorry about that, but I did not realize that whenever you choose the "select one" options with either with radio buttons or check marks then voting is mandatory for that question. There doesn't seem to be any option available if a voter does not want to vote in a specific question.

As a point of interest: For those who design multi-question polls in the future you must be sure to include a "no opinion" choice in each question if it is at all possible that the voter may not want to choose one of your options.

Because of the difficulties experienced would the 1st 5 voters, please re-vote.

As a final caveat, as the proprietor of the Board, Henri must approve our changes & they must be technologically feasible. While I think all the choices offered are doable & reasonable, I might be mistaken.

Last chance to vote - I think! I can never figure out the times on this board but I think there is time left to vote.

I e-mailed Henri on this issue last night. Sorry for the slowness in moving this along but I am very busy at this moment.

Thanks Jack for your effort. I wasn't clear on the poll thingy with regard to my suggestion to add a link on the UBBfaq page to the KiX FAQ Forum. Did that lose out in the end or just get lost in the translation?

The whole purpose of this IMHO was to remove ambiguity. "bulletin board faq" to me is just as ambiguous. It can still be misconstrued as the FAQ Forum. After all "Forum" and "bulletin board" mean pretty much the same.

If we were to add a link on that page to the FAQ Forum we could capitalize on that ambiguity rather than lose the newbie that would search no further.

Sorry, that's how I feel.

What Happened:

Question 3: Majority for choice 3, implemented
Question 5: Majority for choice 1, implemented
Question 6: There was only a majority for choice 3, I requested this change, Henri did not implement it. Why I don't know. Maybe I will have a clearer idea when I see my e-mail at home.
Question 7: No clear majority, not requested, not implemented
Question 8: Majority for 1st choice, implemented

Les,

To some extent I agree with you but the discussion thread was there for all to read & use & we must assume members read it & respect their votes. In Q3 in addition to offering all the options suggested in the discussion thread, I offered the choice of rejecting all of the offered choices. Dispite these points we had a clear majority of 12 out of 18 who choose option 3. I felt that I had no choice but to follow the will of the majority.

Finally, I only asked Henri to make changes where there was a clear consensus indicated by a majority vote of 10 or more.
