I already deleted the keys: no cure [Smile] (or is it [Frown] ?) The keys are automatically generated at startup, so no damage has ocurred. Nevertheless i will continue to search for a solution.

shculie.

do you have the small icons enabled?
if yes, disable them and check the key I showed.
I can't understand how it could not be there as it's same system.

Sorry!

Don't know why, but I got the impression you were using XP... [Smile]

If I get some time later, I'll try and look it up here.

As promised, I did some digging.

After installing a virtual Win2K Pro SP2, I've used RegMon to find the changes. Oddly enough, I noticed a value that looks like it should do it, but also some "weird" keys being changed! So I looked in the web and this is what I found: Explorer Spy.

Being a curious kind of guy, I've delved a bit deeper and found that one of the UIDs that was part of one of the changed keys was the one for ActiveDesktop!!

That is: {75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9} = CLSID_ActiveDesktop...

These are the changed keys using either SetValue or CreateKey:
code:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\IntelliMenus
HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\CURRENTVERSION\Explorer\UserAssist\{75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}\Count\HRZR_EHAJZPZQ
HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\CURRENTVERSION\Explorer\UserAssist\{75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}\Count\HRZR_EHAJZPZQ:0k1,n065

Still doing some more research to try and get to a working piece of code to change it (much more fun than what I had to do... [Smile]

I'll get back when I have that answer. Meanwhile, don't forget to have a look at the link above: it's VERY interesting!!

Just that it would be nice to have, no show-stopper (we're rolling out W2K Pro clients in a few weeks, we just want everything as we like it) [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

You're help would be much appreciated! (as of anyone of cource!)

Schuliebug,

If you are going to use an image to roll out your w2k machine, you could set this setting as part of the defaul user. This is what I have done. I also had the same prob looking for the setting. Spent ages looking for both "show small icons" and also "Auto Arrange" for the desktop.

Don't know if you could do this as part of a unattended setup ?

I've taken some time to look at this problem and these are my findings so far:

There's an undocumented function in module SHELL32.DLL that is exported by number only (no function name); it's #42 and according to some very rare places it's named IntelliMenus and *should* be the responsible for changing that setting...

Haven't had the time to find some decent freeware API spy tools to check it out, and the tools I had no longer work with current OSes like Win2K (haven't done Reverse Engineering for quite some time)...

Will come back, maybe later.

Very nice ... so there is some magic to this after all ... now I'm wondering that if the function is exported by ordinal - whether RUNDLL32 could be used or not ...

Shawn, propably rundll32 could be used, or maybe a call to the shell object, like:
code:
$Tray=CreateObject("Shell.Application")
$RC=$Tray.TrayProperties

This just opens the property screen of the taskbar, but when using the undocumented call Fernando found we could do the trick ?? [Smile] [Smile]

But shouldn't you be coding KiXforms version 2.1 ??? [Wink] [Wink] [Wink]

Dunc: no, no images but handsoff installations via a master disk and the source on the network. We have to many different HW platforms to support to use image technology [Frown]

Fernando: when using filemon we saw the key IntelliMenus edited, so it could do what we're looking for !!!! Great man [Smile]

Don't think RUNDLL supports ordinals, plus - I think they aren't the same across all os versions [Frown] ... Here's some light bedtime reading though ... my head hurts ...

The Shell Icon Cache

[Helps if I post the link]

Just changed this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size = 16

and got some really small icons happening all over the place here [yikes] - was this key already mentioned ?

[WinXP by the way]
