no... pinging a subnet of machines, especially when half them are off or absent takes a lot to time for the timeouts to expire.

Once you have limited your computers to IPs that are active, then either check for remote file or send remote command to look for file.

Since when do you think I can't tell the difference between pinging an IP and reading from a share

pping pinged the subnet a lot faster than any serial ping does, AND returned the responses in a convenient method for scripting.

If you have a better method, bring it out.
