Once you have limited your computers to IPs that are active, then either check for remote file or send remote command to look for file. Since when do you think I can't tell the difference between pinging an IP and reading from a share pping pinged the subnet a lot faster than any serial ping does, AND returned the responses in a convenient method for scripting.
