IIRC, SMBIOS came about at around the Pentium/Pentium II release. It's an extended BIOS for system management. A Google search would give you this info. Thus, some older computers might not have an SMBIOS (DMI BIOS) but just a standard BIOS. I know that our leftover Pentium-133s don't have SMBIOS.
