When trying to register the kixgui.dll under a normal user account on a Windows 2000 Professional workstation I get errors reporting that it was unable to register the dll. If I logout and login as administrator it registers okay. I am sure this is a problem with the local PC policy restricting access to users from registering dll's.

How do I allow users to register dll's without putting them in the local admins group ?

I too have had problems with this. When trying to register KixGUI.dll I get 0x80004005 which seems to be 'Unspecified Error'. Under NT4 the dll can be registered by a non-admin user no problem, but W2k wont allow it.

I would like to avoid any embedded admin password type solutions (for the time being anyway).

Is there a right or reg key that can be changed to allow non-admin users to register dlls on Windows 2000 workstations?

well, there is something.
differences between powerusers and normal users can be seen too.
you will need to check it for yourselfs thou from user manager.
under user rights tab are advanced rights and there is amongst others a right about creating permanent all users object...
or something like that.
don't know exact english translation...

Indeed, a quick test has shown that granting SeCreatePermanentPrivilege to the login user or adding to 'Power Users' local group works.

From what I have been able to gather from Technet and a Google search, SeCreatePermanentPrivilege
allows the creation of shares or '\\device'. Why does the dll registration for KixGui require this right (Alex H. ?)

If possible I would like the DLL to register for that user only, and not require higher permsissions!

dll is kind of a service.
a enchancement to something in the system and it's permanent until it's being removed.

the cause why you don't see this on normal search stuff is just that normal ppl do not work with dll-registeration.

also, adding your users to powerusers is something I suggest you do. it also enables you to set wksta's system time in logon process and other good stuff and still it does not give too much rights to fully mess up the machine...

cheers,

To add a little more to Lonkero explantation, the dll registration has nothing to do only with kixgui, it's like any other program installation. Whatever the dll is, you'll get the same problem, like the one to add a new Norton/Mc Afee/NOD/... version

Thanks for the replies.

I'll have to recommend to our various teams that they add the create permanent right. The power users is too.. well, powerful for most users. We try to keep the desktop a little locked down.

(or investgate the kix crypt type tools)!

that's good.
we also have locked down wksta's in my current work environment.
it just makes me more job.
when network has a routine to reinstall windows
or just to ghost to disks, the reinstallation is so quick (fastest is 5min.) that there is no point making your own work harder by limiting users rights on wksta.

but like I said, it's more like corporative decission and neither way is not so bad.

cheers,
