Hi,

I am trying to use Kixstart 2001 RC3 on Win98. But unfortunately it crashes every time. The trigger seems to be trying to use the INGROUP command on a global security group. I have the Kix RPC service installed on the Windows 2000 server and all .dlls (from the RC1 release) are present. Executables are from RC3.

I have tried two different clients (HP Brio and AOpen AX3S), both with Win98 SE and the DS-client installed. But alas, nothing but crashes. Is anybody seeing this behaviour or is it just me??

Kind regards,
Ries Spruit

Ries,

Welcome!

Are you using the RPC Service on your server?

Do your 9x clients have access to the KX??.DLL files as well?

Thanks!

- Kent

Hi Kent, thank you for the welcome

Yes the RPC service is installed and running,
I start wkix32.exe from a share on the server.
When I try it from the same machine, but now running Win2000 it does work.
But I have not yet tried copying the executables and .dll files locally. But that shouldn't really make a difference should it?

Regards,
Ries

The jury's out on the issue of local KiX executables and DLLs. My understanding is that Wintendo has a lousy redirector and having local copies may improve matters. I know it is a bit more work to maintain up-to-date local copies but it is something you will probably have to test for yourself and decide.

You are right about the lousiness of the redirector Lent. I copied all Kix files (except the script) locally and now it runs like a charm!

Too bad about the extra overhead though, but alas better this then nothing at all.

Thanks y'all

Please also remember that using WKIX32.EXE on Windows 9x requires either LMSCRIPT emulation, or "START /w WKIX32.EXE". Otherwise, the logonscript will close prematurely, and WKIX32 will GPF (or more specifically: the memory manager will throw a in-page IO exception).

Kind regards,

Ruud
