Having inconsistencies when Win9x users run login scripts. Some Win9x clients work, others do not work. Problem with both Win95 and Win98 clients.

Exhausted searches on the board for past several days. I am now at a stand-still.

Performed the following troubleshooting steps:
1) Just to be sure...uninstalled KRPC service (v. 4.02) on ALL winnt DCs.
2) Re-downloaded Kixtart v. 4.02
3) Reinstalled the KRPC service, using newly downloaded files on ALL winnt DCs.
4) Rebooted DCs.
5) Rebooted problem PCs.

Still experiencing inconsistencies with Win9x clients running login scripts.

Thanks in advance for any and all help with this matter.

If the script is not running on some computers or intermitently running, then verify that the script properly located on all domain controllers. If you recently added a domain controller verify the directory replication is working properly.

Do the computers behave consistently? Is the behavior repeated when using an account tht works elsewhere? Have you tried a basic batch file as a script with a pause in it to see if the client can execute any script?

Yes, the script is located on ALL winnt DCs, and it is properly replicating to netlogon shared folder on ALL DCs.

No new DCs have been added to Domain.

What? Are you asking if the computers are consistently acting inconsistent concerning Win9x clients and the login script????

The behavior is repeated sometimes, sometimes the behavior is not repeated.

Created an user account on the domain called "testuser".

Logging on the domain with "testuser", the login script does the following:
-Login script works on ALL Win2k clients tested
-Login script works on SOME Win98 clients tested
-Login script works on SOME Win95 clients tested

Note: KiXtart has never been installed locally on ANY of the client PCs, so no local, KiXtart dlls will be conflicting with the dlls located under the netlogon shares on all DCs.

Yes, clients can execute regular scripts. Basic batch scripts w/out KiXtart scripts runs fine on ALL clients (Win2K, WinNT, Win9x).

How do you call the login script? Are you using a batch file? Please post the batch file.

Can you execute the login script after logging into a Windows 9x computer by manually calling the script?

Put a DEBUG OB into the first line of your login script and step though it to see where it is failing.

What exactly are the inconsistencies that you are seeing. Doen the script not run at all, or does it partially run?

Have you read the Kixtart Starters Guide in the FAQ section about how to call a login script?

A2: Yes, the logon script can be executed from a Win9x client by manually calling the script from any netlogon share on all Domain Controllers.

A4: I will try the DEBUB OB command in the first line of the login script. Not sure where it is failing. The batch file runs, but not the login script.

A5: Logon batch file runs, calls the script, but the script does not run on certain Win98 and Win95 PCs.

I also removed the multiple USE /DELETE lines and compacted it a bit since the stuff is identical for both windows NT and 9x.

Also, please avoid using GOTO statements, it's a sign of inefficient programming.

'/DEL/ is incorrect, it must be '/DELETE'

A small add to Jens's script:

You should never disconnect the Z: drive on Win9x computers, because it is used as a temporary connection to the netlogon share.

Are you using Novell Client? I experienced the same inconsistencies because of the networkcallorder setting in the registry.

Right. Aware of "* /delete /persistent".

Early on, the decision was made not to use * /delete /persistent to delete all mappings because user home directories would be deleted in the process. (Note that the partial script I posted does not delete the R: drive. Hint...hint.)

After rethinking the script, I'm leaning towards the following:
1) Disable User Home Directories under User Manager For Domains (unconducive to have the home directory mapped, simply to have the script delete all mappings).
2) After deleting all mappings, map all user home directories based on @userid.

Jack/All

Is it possible that the following might be occuring:
1) The logon2k.bat file runs and call the drivmap.kix script.
2) The script runs and deletes the Z: drive mapping causing problems for the remainder of the script?

What are some options to work around the z: dirve and netlogon issue in Win9x?

I would think deleting all drives including the Z drive should cause trouble for Win9x but I can't see how this would lead to intermittent problems.

In theory if you pre-map the "netlogon" share before deleting the z drive & don't ever let your script try to find files through the default path, I believe then you can delete the z drive in Win9x without negative reprecussions. Thus if you mapped netlogon as L: you would call your script

L:\logon.bat

And in your this file you would call

L:\kix32.exe l:\logon.kix

and through out your kix script you could specify the L drive when you call other scripts.

Another point, with Win9x clients the default user directories created by the NT user manager can not be easily mapped by DOS, Win9x, or non MS systems. Thus you may need to create an alternate system for creating user shares & attaching them.
