I'm used to using kix as an "on logon" solution. Can it also be used for example to remotely push a time setting to a windows NT server without logging on to it (assuming admin rights)? Thanks, tr6boy
The preferred choice would be to run a time server (W32TIME) on that server. This will update the time in regular intervals.
Alternatively, you will need to execute a piece of code on the remote server. One way of doing this would be to copy a batch file like
code:
NET TIME /SET /Y
to the remote server with e.g. COPY SETTIME.BAT \\server\admin$\ and then use the Task Scheduler to run this batch file once, or regularly (like a cheap time server). There is a ScheduleTask UDf in the UDF section that programs a remote Task Scheduler.
Nevertheless, W32TIME is highly recommended for this type of problem.

w32time is no good if you don't have time server running on w2k PDC!!!
that's also why I disabled it from every w2k installation our net has.
w2k timeserver is no problem otherwise, but it seems to be unable, uttleast here in finland to get time info from timeservers. of any class or type. I had one program which did work, but it did have to be ran by user or trough servany.
this is also why net time services on our domains runs trough linux samba server which has broven to be much more reliable.
but in other hand, if you have w2k server as PDC, your networks machines is easiest to be synched via w32time. it is another issue to get the correct world wide time...
You can set up W32TIME in any way you want. Normally, you'd set up a three-tierd system. 1) At least one Primary Time Server that pulls from a well-defined time source (list of those is publicly available and I believe also listed in W32TIME documentation) 2) At least one Secondary Time Server which pulls time from local Primary Time Server 3) Workstations pull from Secondary Time Server
In order to make this setup work, you will need to modify W32TIME.INI accoridng to the documentation.
Of course you could use the Samba Server as time source for the W32TIME server. I have found W32TIME to be very reliable.

jens, there was two problems: 1. w32time did not get the times from even secondary time servers. and actually, I have got no connection to finnish "public" time servers whatsoever.
2. w2k clients poll the timeserver info from domain controller. even if do configure other machine to be the server it does not accept it.
I've found lots of comments on the internet, mostly from europe I quess, stating that w32time does not work correctly, but it needs other app to get the correct time to the server. ok, I can pull all my servers time from network but as long as my network is nt4 controlled I will have, if I enable w32time service on clients, event viewer full of w32time related errors and warnings.
W32Time will pull time from any NTP time source. There are lots of NTP time sources to choose from. I pull time from a GPS but can also pull it from my Cisco router. W32Time can be configured to make the server a LANMAN tile source and then the clients will pick up their time from it.
