MCA,

If I understand the interpretation of the formula, you do not get 4.99 votes. Implicitly this might be correct but not directly. Directly you only get one vote with a weight of 4.99. The statistical database for the ratings could store sufficient information for estimating a host of different variables including the number of votes. The key question is what is stored & retained. Are the calculations using the current rankings of members or just the rankings at the time of voting? The best results would be obtained using current rankings but this would imply a recursive estimation formula not the simple one given. Also, are rankings derived from a large current database of rankings or are just the numerator, denominator & number of votes retained & then as each new vote is added the three values are updated? This is the easiest methodology to program but it is less accurate.

Surprisingly, a simple idea like this can be very difficult to implement correctly.

jack,
You speek nicely but takes too much time to read your posting the way it's understood.

I could catch the point you are saying anyhow.

I was thinking that it might simply be just that the stored values are votes count and sum.
and the sum with two decimal accuracy?

this way, person with one star makes no difference because influence is so low that it does not change the last decimal.

this way also, person that had voted for you when he didn't have rating didn't have influence on your score. and neither hes voting influences your score still if he now has five star rating!

poor.

this should be digged up or I can't keep myself from pulling my hear off...

Well, not sure what all this math crap is doing... I'm a five star and have been since a couple weeks after voting was implemented.

Current 23 votes Weighted Score 4.69

I just now gave Lonkero a 5 star vote. Seems I have neglected to vote on a few people. Not that it seems to matter, Lonkero's rating did not change as far as I can see after I voted for him.

Perhaps someone could send a link to this thread to the author of the code for UBB and see what he has to say about it. [Roll Eyes]

I can't figure this thing out. My weighted score has been 4.86 for as long as I remember yet we can see by Rad's progression that it can change.

It is unfortunate that once you cast your vote, you cannot revise it. We all have room for improvement (well me anyway), so if one redeems oneself, they should not be held to the old vote.

I have reserved my voting to five stars only, meaning that only those that deserve five stars get my vote. Only when someone posts something exceptional do I give them a vote.

Lonkero,

Given the formula & the information displayed for each member at least 3 variables need to be stored.

a) count of members who voted for you
b) sum of the weights of persons who voted for you(a member's weight is their numerical star ratings)
c) sum of the weighted scores given you = sum of( (member Weight)x(score given by member))

Then what is displayed is

Votes = a
Rating = (c/b)

Note variables "a" has no relationship with a member's weight or star rating & this is why MCA sees his vote as counting for 1 all the time but in the second variable (c/b) he is implicitly being counted as 4.99 members while Shawn is being counted as 4.86 members.

In finality pour moi,

The fact that I am infrequent contributor gave me a rather high rating score. Somewhat amusingly my 2 votes of 5-stars gives me more influence than either Shawn or MCA. Bizarre, I am a head of the Batman & Superman of this board!

I kind of agree with Shawn & several others that maybe we are taking this too seriously. I am kind of suprised at myself for getting involved since in all my history here, I had only voted 3 times & received only 2 votes in return. It was a part of the system that I never felt comfortable with & I opted out of it for that reason.

I am glad if my comments result in Radimus getting a 5-star rating because he deserves it but I promise this is my last comment on this subject.

Dear,

Infopop board returns an answer:
quote:

I think what may be the misunderstanding here is "Total votes". That's the total
number of people who have given you ANY vote. So if:
Person A gives 1 star
Person B gives 2 stars
Person C gives 3 stars
(assume A, B, C do not have any ratings themselves).

Then, the results should be:
Rating: 2 stars (the average, since all 3 had the same weight)
Total votes: 3. (3 people voted)

Graeme

So the votes value are only related to the amount of people who has vote on you.
Your weight factor is related to the amount of stars given by your voters.
greetings.

MCA,

I think that I understand the concept of total votes. It is a straight forward count of the number of voters. Unfortunately, the example Graeme offered is not very illuminating. I would rather have the following example rated by Graeme.
code:

Person A gives 1 star and has no rating currently and was unrated at the time of voting.

Person B gives 2 stars and is currently rated at 2.1 stars but was unrated at the time of first voting.

Person C gives 5 stars has a rating of 4.1 currently and also at the time of voting.

Person D gives 1 stars has a rating of 1.0 currently and also at the time of voting.

Dear,

For use was the major question: what is the relation between voting rate and number of votes.
code:
                sum(voting rates of all voters)
member_rated = ---------------------------------
number of voters

It looks simple, but why should such algorithm be complex.
The voting mechanism shows two elements:
- how many members have vote on you
- what was the mean voting rate/how appreciate they you.
greetings.

btw: it will be more nice to see which topic are reading mostly. The other product of Infopop has
this capability and of course a great amount of other forum board manifactories.
