We are in the process of putting togther a plane to upgrade our NT4.0 wstns to XP, however, we need to redirect Windows Update URL site to our local Intranet location on all clients.I checked the GPO but all I could find is the policy to Disable Windows update!. Any help would be appreciated Sam

With Kixtart you can write to the registry with "WRITEVALUE".
So you can change the windows update url to the url you want.
On my Windows2000 Pro machine the url can be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate.
I don't no or it's different by other windows versions.
But if you search for WindowsUpdate in the registry I'm sure you can found the key.

I was able to find the Key, however, I could not find any reference to Microsoft Windows Update site!!. Where does windows gets the information of the update site (URL)?Sam

In my register by the specified key there is a string value named "url" with the url to the windows update site; http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/?Start
If there is no one in your registry, add them manual and try or it works or not.

UPDATE: I have tested it on my system and changing the key doesn't make Windows Update goes to an another site, so the url must be specified somewhere else.
I get searching for it...

Yes found it!
Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Help_Menu_Urls"
There you can find the string value called "3" with as value the url to windows update.

The update on windows xp professional (test station) works fine, yet the key does NOT contain any reference to any URL.This is really frastrating  by microsoft, it should be a policy in the GPO where the disable policy is, and not hidden somewhere were we have to dig for it. I hope someone can shed some light on this issue. Thanks

Checked the help_menu_urls but it is EMPTY!.What OS are you using Winkel?, please note that I'm using XP (it should not make a difference...I think!).

I have look in the registry of WinNT server SP6a en W2K pro.
Both haves this keys.
What is the result if your searching for http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/?IE in the registry?

Lasad, I checked your question and started to search info on the issue and then when it seems so hard to find an answer I'm asking.
can there be a tweak solution?
simply like disabling the windows update and to add to menu your own "windows update" shortcut.
and if you have really a nice server where you want the link to point, you can put your nameserver to link the windowsupdate.microsoft.com address to that server, right?so, if not the nice way is available, do it the hard way... or what?!?!? and yet there is logonscripts for application updates. so you have uttleast 3 simple ways to go around this problem. cheers,

Lonkero,Thanks for the info, I have to say creating my own Windows update shortcut sounds good, however, I have read in windows update documents that it is possible to override the default URL for coroperate solution (save on internet bandwidth) but it does not say HOW!. Thanks

but you can use one download for all computers by accessing http://corporate.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Well, I think I figured it out, the URL can only be modified during the IE setup using the IEAK were you can specify an alternative URL in the ADDON.HTM file.However, does that mean we have to re distribute the IE program to all users? (I hope not!), is there an alternative?. Sam

Import this one in your registry and replace the url to an url you want.

Sandar,Thanks for the registry key, but it does not work on XP, after importing it into my registry I tried to change the location but it was still going to Windowsupdate.microsoft.com site, I will keep on researching this problem and if I find anything I will post it here. Thanks again
