My name is Jonathon Lester, I am owner of Simplified Networking. Our company has worked very hard to produce a GUI for KIXTART. We now have it completed. We are waiting for the license permission but in the meantime we need 11 beta testers. Keep in mind the product has been beta tested very thoroughly but only on 2 networks. We need more info before we can Distribute it.

I am looking for 11 indeviduals who have administrator privlages on their domain.
In return for helping us out we will be giving you the product at a very large discount(Should we get permission to use Kixtart)along with 20 user licenses. If you would like to investigate the product to learn more please visit our website http://www.simplifiednetworking.com
Thank you,

Jonathon Lester
P.S. Just submit a post to be considerd for the testing program.

Dear towercrasher,

I bet he means that "copy con script.kix" is more than enough for most of the cases. For really large scripts, vi or notepad maybe save some time : )

TESTING 1.2.3

Jon,George,J

[sounds like a Beatles reunion]

Jochen's referring to an ActiveX control we're developing that provides a visual basic forms interface for stand-alond KiXtart apps ... used by scripts, not used to build scripts. The title of this post could be taken both ways

George, your the only guy I know that could pull-off a copy con kixtart script and have it work the first time

Jon:

Briefly tried your Visual KiXtart before leaving work today. Very nice, very slick and professionally done. Got a concern though - we can save a script locally (albeit in binary format), but this "replication" option got me nervous - why can't I save an (ascii) script to my workstation. I personally would shy away from having a beta app writing to my repl/exports directory (even on a test server) - might want to re-think that part ... did I miss the boat here because I didn't get a chance to read the manual - might want to enlighten us and maybe briefly describe how Visual KiXtart generate scripts ?

In terms of cost, I get the impression from your web slides that this will be coming in around $800 dollars - close ?

-Shawn

Shawn,
I have the Script encoded several different ways so that it cannot be produced then distributed so its difficult but possible to run the script without using the servers netlogon share. But I have tested it very very thoroughly and can assure you we have had no problems with the replication. It has been being tested for about 3 months. I do recomend backing up the netlogon share however.

There is a workaround if you still feel uncomfortable with it. Create a directory in another system and call it netlogon. Share this Directory and give yourself appropriate permissions. After doing this chose to replicate to that machine with the newly formed False NETOLOGON. For ***Example if the non Domain Controller computer name is primarynt you would replicate to \\primarynt\netlogon.
After doing this you want to create a batch script and place it in the REAL logon server THE Domain Controller. This batch script should should read like this (in this example) \\primarynt\netlogon\vkix.bat
Then point you profile to run the batch script you created on the REAL NETLOGON SHARE.
That probably was about as clear as mudd.

There is a full-blown help file and complete instructions and a few other things included with the program. with the program open you can just hit the f1 key or go to the about menu and go to help.

Visual KIX is licensed according to the computers MAC address it is installed on. This is the number that appears in the tools menu under license. Send me yours and I will send you a license key for your domain.
my personal email address is owner@simplifiednetworking.com
You can also get your mac address by getting to a command prompt and typing nbtstat -a (your ip address) Do not include the () Marks.

Pricing........... I developed Visual KIX to be cost effective. The price will not be over $350.00 U.S. Per Domain and comes with 20 user licenses. Each CAL after that is $5.00. The origanal cost was going to be 250.00 but some unexpected expenses came up during developement Im still really wanting to lower the cost to 250.00 but some key things have to fall into place.

If you have any other questions please contact me.

Thank you,

Jonathon Lester

Dear Jon,

We are always glad that commercial organizations are using KiXtart as basis for their products.

Some questions:
- what are the differences between the other two products from http://www.scriptlogic.com and http://www.vai.nl
and your product?
- what kind of impact does it have for clients
and servers during an installation?
- in which way users can incorporate their scripts
in your product?
- what kind of things users will not find in your product?
Another question for you and other members:
- know people other products which can be used for simplifying your logon process?
our opinion: not so much of them and not with great capabilities.
greetings.

btw: we have already download the trial version of 5.87 Mbytes.

Jon,

well, Shawn has already answered your question ... actually he develops that ActiveX Control, and I only hang around simply
waiting for a new build to receive (kind'a feeling that kids have before Christmas ) ... to say it as it is - It will be a killer app when finished ! Very powerful !

regards

Jochen

Jonathon,

Is it right that I cannot open the script in a text-editor? If so, this will be a reason for me not to use it.

The GUI is fine.

martijnl,
No, the script cannot be opened in a text editor. I would have liked to have made the script editable but If i sold the product like that than only a few people would buy it and then make scripts for everyone else.

Some questions:
- what are the differences between the other two products from http://www.scriptlogic.com and http://www.vai.nl
and your product?
>>There are several Differences. One is the ease of use. Visual KIX was designed to be able to be used by a Beginner Network Admin but still offer options that Someone who had been doing it for a while would enjoy and get good use out of. Second is the Price. The final price has not been decided on but it will not go over $350.00 and our product comes with 20 client access licenses. After that we also have a very low price of $5.00 per CAL. This was the second reason Visual KIX was created. I could not get approval to spend over a thousand dollars for a logon program for the Company I worked for. There were several people envolved with the creation of this product and we believe we have a better product at a better price and we are only on version 1.0. I cannot speak much about VAI because I have not used there product and I could not find the Price on their Website. On my website, however, there is a complete support forum setup to handle VK questions.

- what kind of impact does it have for clients
>>The Clients show no impact upon installation. The only impact they would have is when adding there MAC Address to the licensing area. To do this we use the command nbtstat. This is very minimal impact and only lasts a second. There is no other information held in the program pertaining to Client Computers.

and servers during an installation?
>>>Servers Impact is minimal as well. Of Course it takes some impact upon install but the program does not need that much memory to servive and since the script is ran from the NETLOGON directory Visual KIX (VK) does not have to be running all the time on the server, just when creating the script. As a matter of fact the installation does not even have to be done on a server but can be done on any computer and then replicated to the NETLOGON share of the Primary DC. But VK does need to be registered on a computer that will continue to be used in creating scripts. If you change Computers or the Network Card Goes out you must contact our company to get a new Serial Number because it is controlled from the MAC Address.

- in which way users can incorporate their scripts
in your product?
>>>>In this first version, Unfortunately it is not possible to do this. In upcoming Versions it will be a possibility. But I believe everything KIXTART will do we can do.

- what kind of things users will not find in your product?
>>>>>As mentioned previously The inability to add KIXTART Scripts. On the other hand users can add registry settings. The ability to add these scripts will be available in future Releases.

btw: we have already download the trial version of 5.87 Mbytes.
>>>>>>>>Excellent, If you would like to run it on more computers just send me your MAC Address and I will give you a Temperary Serial Number! You can send this information to owner@simplifiednetworking.com

Actually it is possible, you can add a line such as -

kix32.exe myscript.kix

- in "vkix.bat" before or after VK does it's job and you can have your script execute before or after VK runs.

The Lead Program Designer Andrei Alecu Tachyon-labs just informed me he does think it is possible to add personal scripts to Visual KIX. Under the vkix.bat file in the netlogon Directory you could add a line such as kix32.exe myscript.bat and this should work but its never been tested.

Hi Jonathon,

I downloaded your program and took a brief look at it.

Not a big deal, but on the Service Pack screen maybe you could populate each field with only the available Service Packs based upon the selected OS. i.e. Windows 2000 does not have any SP above 2 at the moment and NT 3.51 quit around 5 I think.

How can you do custom things like search for files and take different actions based upon the results? How can you check file dates and compare? How do you check IP address and split it up into octets? etc... Maybe I'm overlooking the obvious.

A screen resize would be nice also. I use 1600x1200 and the program is a little small. Not bad, but still small.

It's a good idea to have as many options as possible... Windows 2000 may get a Service Pack 4 someday (because Service Pack 3 is on it's way)

I don't really understand what you mean, are you asking if Visual KIX can do these tasks or how they are done?

I know 2000 may get more, I meant more along the lines of NT 3.51 which does not go above SP5 yet your dropdown allows me to say 6 or 7.

I know how to do many things in KiXtart that I don't see how to do right off hand with your program. i.e. If it is not in your progam how do I do it? I seem to be limited to your creativity instead of mine and other ideas I can find.

As an example how do I get the same results using your program?

code:
ENDIF
IF $NoNavWarn <> 0
$nul = MESSAGEBOX("Unable to locate the Norton AntiVirus program on this system. Please contact the Helpdesk to have the program installed or checked for problems with a previous installation. ", "Norton AntiVirus Program Update", 16)
GOTO END
ENDIF

CASE (SUBSTR(@IPADDRESS0,1,11)) = "122.114.241" AND $PARENT = "S01"

NTDOC,

As mentioned previously you do have the ability to run your own scripts. Just go in the "vkix.bat" file located under netlogon and put your script call before or after VK gets told to be called and you can have your script execute before or after VK runs.

This way you will only be limited by yourself

Took a quick look.
Boy oh boy, does it look a lot like ScriptLogic... Even your pricing model of Domain + CALs mirrors that of ScriptLogic.

As they say, being copied is the best form of flattery...

You can use the "Application Launcher" feature to launch the NAV update at a given time, you can even choose on which Domain/IP Address/Username/etc. to run it on. You can even copy files on the remote computer with that feature by using the OS' "copy" command as you did in your script.
