I know I've seen how to do this somewhere before, but I can't seem to find it again. Does anyone know how to do this?

Pete

The one I gave works for Win95 but I presume that it works for all. A quick check of my NT registry seems to confirm this.

With NT & Win2000 machines you need to have write permission for this key.

Hi Pete,

you might also want to change the Network Neighbourhood icon, to reflect the network you are logged on to. The key for that is: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D} You could name it something useful like @UserID At @LDomain

Hello All,
you can also use REG_EXPAND_SZ instead of REG_SZ. You can then use environmentvariables like %USERNAME% or %COMPUTERNAME%.

Thanks for the replys guys!

One more question....Once this is modified in the registry, is there a way to prevent the end user from changing the name of the icon on the desktop with the rename command?

Not in Win9x. We reset it at every logon. Naughty 4-letter words are very popular with our younger male students. These icons plus the desktop & screensaver are a major battlefield for us. We tried lots of different policy constraints but these little so-and-sos are very creative. Microsoft apps in particular seem to open back doors into areas we want frozen. We found wiping desktop settings, desktop icons, & the screensaver at every logon was necessary.

NT you might be able to use ownership to lock down these areas more effectively.

I like this a lot! How do I get around users who do not have strong enough permissions to change/modify their registry?

Thanks,

Also,
I am running this little addition on my machine and it updates the registry but the display name on my desktop does not reflect the change. Why?

Thanks,
Jason

I have that problem on my workstation also. but only for me (Win 2k client). If someone else logs on to my machine it works fine. It appears to be working fine on every other client though. So I have no idea what the problem is.

I use this one for Win NT as shown above by JackLothian:

WriteValue("HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}","","My Computer %computername%","REG_SZ")

And this one for Win 2k:

WriteValue("HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}","LocalizedString","@@C:\WINNT\system32\shell32.dll,-9216@@1033,My Computer %computername%","REG_SZ")

I saw the one for Win 2k at the Windows 2000 magazine web site. The registry is a bit different in Win 2k since they added the Info Tip.

This is what you get if you open regedt32 and do a Save Subtree as... for that key.

Key Name: CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
Class Name: <NO CLASS>
Last Write Time: 12/12/2000 - 1:28 PM
Value 0
Name: <NO NAME>
Type: REG_SZ
Data: My Computer

Value 1
Name: InfoTip
Type: REG_SZ
Data: Displays the files and folders on your computer

Value 2
Name: LocalizedString
Type: REG_SZ
Data: @C:\WINNT\system32\shell32.dll,-9216@1033,My Computer

The recomend changing the LocalizedString value rather than the No Name value for Win 2k.

Check this page out. Maybe it will make it a little more clear.
http://www.win2000mag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?Action=Comments&ArticleID=8746

Since KiXtart takes care of of the %computername%, I just used the REG_SZ data type tather than the REG_EXPAND_SZ data type they recomend.
