Sorry to bother you guys with a question not pertaining to Kixtart (great program, by the way) but I have not been able to find an answer to my problem anywhere else and you guys seem to be able to answer a lot of obscure questions about the NT registry.

I currently have a NT 4.0 workstation on my network that, for some unknown reason, has replaced the little shortcut indicator arrow with the "My Computer" icon. Now all of the shortcuts are displayed with this big icon overlayed on top of all of the application icons. This makes it very difficult to tell what a shortcut is pointing to without reading the title below the icons.

Can anyone tell what may have happened and is there any way to restore it to normal without reinstalling NT? I feel like there is a registry setting i can restore, but have not been able to figure out which one. I have tried applying SP6a, reinstalling IE 5.5 SP1, and searched the MS Knowledge Base.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hmm, have you tried 'powertoys' and ran the 'repair icons' option? or there's a restore icons thingy also.

i'm pretty sure it's a registry entry, just can't remember where it is [end of a long day and that...]

hope this helps

Never heard of 'powertoys'. Where would I find them?

Hya D.Adams.

The RegKey where you could set a Icon other than the 'little shortcut indicator arrow' is to be found in :
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons"
Use this to reset this:

code:
DELKEY("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons")
ADDKEY("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons")

Thanks for the advice, but I found the answer when I checked a link on the "Scripts" page of the Kixtart homepage called www.virtualdr.com. They have discussion groups just like this one for NT/2K/9x/ME/...

The solution is to delete the ShellIconCache file from the system directory (c:\WinNT) and reboot the computer. This may have to be done several times, but it finally works.

I will have to give that a shot on my home computer.

All of the folder icons look like the standard folder, but with something imposed over the top of them, a black square. I installed a game and it did this to my computer
