Gang:

Sorry for the off topic.

Does anyone know of a way (or util) that can change a NT hostname (computername). Kinda like the way NETDOM can add a computer into a domain. We're trying to automate the last phases of our WinNT workstation imaging process. I'm not interested in tools like sysprep, etc. Just free tricks or utils !

Kinda like to do both (change hostname and join domain) in one step (without rebooting).

[I can just see Micrsoft cringing at that last requirement!]

Hi there Shawn,

Just wondering, how do you install the machine ? Are you using a ghost image or an unattended setup file ?

Perhaps with an unattended setup file you can modify the name before installing.

Hi Ernie...

Yeah - we're using Ghost.

So after we ghost and ghostwalk, it would be nice to present a little autologon kix script that would prompt the Tech for a new hostname and domain.

We use NETDOM to do the join domain... can't think what to use to do for the hostname part.

Searched the web and found nothing...

Shawn.

Shawn -
I've never attempted this, so if question obviously wrong - sorry.

So, you are looking for some way to write to HKLM\CCS\Control\ComputerName\ComputerName (WinNT/2k), or is there more to renaming than this key? You need a dialog screen that accepts input that is used by Kix to write the value?

That's EXACTLY what I want !

But it cost's money and I've just spent my last two bucks on coffee and a donut. I was poking around sysinternals.com and couldn't find anything there either (they do have a free sid changer that can change the hostname)...

Hmmm... I'm going to keep poking around... how much is this product anyway ?

Shawn.

It is a good collection of tools, even has a DLL so that you can do all of the functions via a COM interface....

here is their pricing page.

I've written a set of batch scripts to do EXACTLY this. Machine has once script run before the image is made to make the newly imaged PCs prompt for the machine name ( we use the serial number) then it changes the SID, joins the domain, defrag's it's registry and page files, defrags \winnt then reboots ready to be shut down and placed on a user's desk and have the printer installed.

If anyone is interested I'll try to find them over the weekend (I've not got a copy to hand, but do in the images) I'm off on holiday on Monday so if I don't get round to it I'll try to remember to do it when I get back.
