Hi,
I can't get ADDPRINTERCONNECTION to work. My syntax is ADDPRINTERCONNECTION ("\\ntserver-pdc\b122e-hp5si"). All my clients are Win95 and Win98 and I'm running NT Server 4 with service pack 6a and the latest kixtart 3.62. I basically need a script that will connect all my clients to my pdc print server and in the event of a failure, I can redo the scripts to point to my bdc printer server and have all my clients reboot. I did install all the drivers to the local machine so that way, nt will not download anything. Will that work? What I am asking is possible right? Thanks in advance...

MrPotatoHead

Love the name!

Have you tried doing a search on this board for ADDPRINTERCONNECTION?

I bet you will find an example script to do just what you want.

MrPotatoHead

I giggle as I type that name! :-)

OK, we ARE talking about Win9x here. I had a problem on setting up printers on Win9x clients manually! Until I discovered my share names for the printers were over 8 characters long! And the printer names were too!

So I renamed them all (9 in total) so that the printer names and share names were all 8 characters long and NO more. This allowed the Win9x clients to connect to the printers and update the drivers from the server etc.

Try this out with 1 printer and try not to include any - or _ in the name if poss!

I may be barking up the wrong tree here but this COULD be the problem.

Oh (just in case) did you read this thread?
http://kixtart.to/script/board/ubbhtml/Forum2/HTML/000072.html
They mention a con2prt utility.

Good luck.
Don

Good call don. I haven't tried that yet. And yes all my names have "-" in them and all are over 8 char. I'll repost a reply after I try this. Thanks.

Well I changed the name and shared name to just "5si" so my line looks like ADDPRINTERCONNECITON ("\\ATCSPENG-PDC\5si")
and I still get an error code "120". I did not install the drivers for my win9x clients on the NT machine because they are already installed on the clients. Does this matter? Any more help? I'd hate to goto the con2prt utility if I can get the kixtart to work. I'm not doing anything special on the nt machine, just your usual "lpr" type connection. All my kixtart dll's and exe are located in my netlogon directory, I'm not running the kixtart as a service. Any more ideas? Thanks again.

MrPotatoHead

Damn it!

I am running out of ideas here.

I know the manual mentions that ADDPRINTERCONNECTION works for NT and doesn't mention Win9x, I just wish I knew what that error code is?

What happens if you try and connect to a printer manually? What registry key/s is/are created.

Our printers are set up with print servers and the drivers are installed on the server, (not using lpr) as I have not tried to use the ADDPRINTERCONNECTION with this set up I feel I may be the wrong guy to help. But I will keep trying.

Anyone any ideas out there?
Thanks
Don

Ok

Error 120 is "120-This function is only valid in Win32 mode"

This could be pointing to the fact these are Win9x machines and not NT.

From what I have seen on this board everyone who tried addprinterconnection have had trouble and has gone to con2prt utility.

Unless someone out there knows different?

Hi

Ok, I have just tried addprinterconnection on my system using a test script and user.

Same problems as MrPotatoHead! How silly does that sound!!

Looks like it don't work for Win9x (as per manual) I hate to say it, but it looks like a con2prt job.

Hello again!

Is Con2prt.exe for NT? According to MS it don't mention it will work with Win9x!

See here:

I suppose it could be tried, suck it and see?

Ok,
I give up on kixtart for mounting my printers, so I just tried the con2prt.exe and it don't work either. I just copied the con2prt.exe to my "netlogon" directory of my pdc and when i tried to connect to a shared printer, I got that the printer does not exist. I do a net view on my print server and I can see the share. what's up with this? I did not install the zak kit from microsoft, i just copied the con2prt.exe. does this matter? Thanks for the help...

Greetings,

I have used the following to successfully move my clients (NT & 95) from one print server to another.

Hope you find this workable.

Trevor

;Script to move printer from -Srv1- to -Srv5-
If @InWin=1
If AddPrinterConnection("\\Srv5\hplj8000")=0
$result=DelPrinterConnection("\\Srv1\hplj8000")
EndIf
Else
$PrintSrv=ReadValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\Print\Printers\HP LaserJet 8000 Series PCL 6","Port")
If $PrintSrv="\\Srv1\hplj8000"
$Srv5=WriteValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\Print\Printers\HP LaserJet 8000 Series PCL 6","Port","\\Srv5\hplj8000","REG_SZ")
If @error=0
$result=SetDefaultPrinter("HP LaserJet 8000 Series PCL 6")
EndIf
EndIf
EndIf
