I've tried leaving the PC connected for about 30 seconds after Windows 2000 has started up, and it's a 2 gig laptop so it shouldn't take THAT long to initialise the networking side of things should it?

The problem occurs when the laptop is directly connected to the company network - we don't currently support remote working.
