As for grasshoppers script, only grasshopper can answer that Q. If you do not understand his script and he does not support it, then I would abandon it.
Take a look at Jens' CheckNICs() UDF. If you build around it and don't piss Jens off too badly, he may help you. You cannot expect people to analyze and then support someone else's (grasshoppers) script.
If you are going to muck about in the registry then you had better understand what it does. I cannot stress this enough!
