The best advice I can offer is to STFB.

Dear Les,

Please don't use abbreviations on the starters forum.
On the whole board only seven times this STFB was used.

STFB stands for Search The 'Friendly' Bulletin Board.

Another more common one is: RTFM = Read The 'Friendly' Manual

greetings.

Sounds very close to this: Making new users when login in

Anyway, take a look at the NET command at the command prompt, e.g. NET /?

Also, please take your time and read the KiXtart Manual and the FAQ Forum. This will most likely get you started.

Talking about abbreviations....Les could be possible to have the 15 more used like LOL, ROLFMAO, BTW, STFB etc at the KiXtart FAQ & How to's forum as a topic?
I can tell lots of people like me get lost with so many abbreviations.
If not point them out here!!
What do u think?
Thanks again. [Wink]

Hello hathor and Welcome to the board.

I'll try to be a little kinder then my buds here. [Wink]

First off when you say you want to create 20 users, do you mean FULL NT/2000 Network ID Accounts?

Please list a little more information and I'll try to help you get through this.

1. What version of KiXtart are you using?
2. What Network? NT or 2000 AD?
3. What all client types do you have to support, meaning 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP?
4. Do you have Domain Admin or OU Admin Rights?
5. What OS is your Workstation?

Then list examples of the server names and locations that you would like to map.

After answering these questions I (or others) will be able to help you further.

Thanks...

Jose,
If I added all those acronyms to my sig it would be longer than Jens' and DOC's combined. Seems to me ppl can STFW for them.

1. well i downloaded a zip file kix2001_420
i simply copied those unzipped files into my programs directory.
2. i work on windows 2000 advanced in vmware they said it should be compatible for every client system)4. i dont have a domain or anything like that. All they wanted me to do was create 20 users and some groups, i also have to create 15 maps and each user or group has specific rights on one or more of those maps thats like the only thing i know here how to place security on them
5. im working on xp professional

i simply call them map1-map15 and place them under
a share called 'verslagen' thats reports in dutch
-> c:\verslagen\map1
so its all local on my own system in vmware
can i do this all in command prompt? or do i need something extra?

You can use the NET command to create users and groups. If you don't run AD (doesn't sound like it) then you'll have to create local users groups. Type NET /? on the command prompt to see options. Then use the MD command to create directories and use RMTSHARE (I believe fromt eh Windows Resource Kit) to create shares. Use CACLs to set permissions on folders. All this can be doen from a batch file or through a KiXtart script.

However, as this is obviously a school project i doubt, anybody will (or even should) post a complete script for you. Your best approach is a s follows. Develop a flow-chart of the actions you'll need to perform.

Start with the high-level tasks, the divide each atsk into sub-tasks. Finally write the pseude-code and convert it into real code.

You will find scripts performing your tasks posted throughout this site. Use the BBS SEarch to retreive them. However, read the KiXtat Manual and the FAQ Forum first!

off course [Big Grin]
i do not want a full script written by someone else because then i still wouldnt understand
how to make it myself.
btw we can place the security in win2000 itself so thats not any problem [Wink] im just asking for a few directions.
on how to make that batch file that creates users and groups and a kixfile that puts a mapping between the users and their maps
i was wondering if i had to make a file with notepad and give it the right extension or if everything is done via command prompt cause i heard different versions [Confused]

To get you started:
TEST.BAT
code:
NET LOCALGROUP "Group A" /COMMENT:"This is Group A"

NET USER UserA password /add /homedir:\\SERVER\users\UserA /scriptpath:login.bat

MD "\\SERVER\USERS\UserA"

If you have more question, please search the KiXTart BBS or the web as this type of information is readily available.

Command prompt vs. script. It's better to use a script (batch file or KiXtart script) because you can add/edit/debug these scripts. However, it doesn't really matter which way you go. Batch files are easier than KiXtart scripts. KiXtart scripts calling external commands via RUN/SHELL are easier than using COM automation.
