I have got the job to move homedirs (about 50) from our old PDC to more stable new server.

the problem is just that winrar is unable to restore the file rights.
I think it's purely because the move is from NT to W2K.
I read this:
http://kixtart.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=001959

but is it only solution?
to use 500kB vbScript to copy the rights?

Jooel, we have had success using robocopy with the "/sec" option for move the file system security. Do you have permissions on the shares as well? We do not put perms on shares as this is extra managerial overhead we avoid.

we do have perms on shares as normal users have file perms default as everyone full.
on some special shares that is not the case though.

robocopy you say, so, I go back and check what it can do.

I've never had to move shares between NT and 2K, but looking at SubInACL from ResKit may be of value.

You can use SCopy.exe from the ressource kit to copy the files from the old location on the NT server
the new location on the 2k server.

I have just recently used SCopy to move files from a NT4 server to a SAN on a 2k server.
All files and NTFS perms are coppied correctly.

To create the shares with the correct permissions on the new server, and change the homeshare in the
userprofiles you will have to make some COM-scripting.

When doing a total copy SCopy is supperior to RoboCopy, because SCopy also coppies files and directories
you are not allowed to see as administrator!!

I found RoboCopy on both NT4 and 2K ResKits but SCopy only on NT4 RK.

I was thinking, if the groups are local how does the copy work... had some issues with my linux server some time ago...
will see.

re-connecting vpn...

Subinacl.exe is a program that can do wonders for you.

We are in the process of migrating data from a nt4 member server to a W2K member server where security is handled via member server local groups.

We robo copied the data using "/sec" to the new W2K server. The result is that the file and directory ACLs referenced the SIDs of the groups from the NT4 local groups.

We created new groups on the W2K server using my GpMaint and populated them with the master domain accounts.

Subinacl to replace the NT4 server SIDs with the SIDs of the W2K server groups.

I suggest that NTFS permissions are better than applying permissions to shares. Is there a debate that will ensue from this statement?

what you need ntfs security for?
if it's homeshare for user, only needed thing is share sec.
this removes the need to run such tools as robocopy.

only place where file perms are needed is on share where more variety of users have rights.

like division shares.
but as users are dummy as they are, they are not going to use perms on files anyway.

eh, one thing for my todo list.
should keep a little course on this.

That's is a great discussion for another time.

I have just created a share on my workstation using the security descriptor from a share on a remote server. I have tested both NT4 to W2K Pro and W2K server to W2K Pro).

If all you need to do is create shares on a new server using the security of a remote share, I can wrap this up into Win32Admin.DLL.

Isn't there a /SECFIX option to fix that?

The "/sec" options will copy the existing file/directory permissions that existed on the source files. If they as you have said were set with "no" permissions (everyone FULL), then no harm done unless the new parent directory has some other permissions preset.

yeah, most of them are with no additional sec.
only the one as in share admins/user full.

anyway, found that some of our big bosses have security set.
wondered why one share was taking so long to copy, after 30mins only 1M and checked log:
access denied [Eek!]

I thought that it's enough that me as domain admin have rights on the parent folder.

...but sooner or later some some dummy will...

Howard is correct on this...

imho, the first thing to do is get rid of "everyone" whenever feasible [Smile]
