As a complete novice...
I want to run a script that sets the domain name as Windows 98 clients log in to a Win2000 server.
At the moment students frequently change the default domain name that comes up in the login box, and this obviously creates problems..
Any ideas please?

Did this a long time ago. Search the registry for your domain name. It was a simple Registry WriteValue. But I do not remember if it took effect immediately or required a reboot.

In your search, look for PUTINENV.EXE and WINSET.EXE..
These variables are also settable in KiX without the use of these utilities.

Here's what we used at our site to move our 9x machines code:
$RC = WRITEVALUE("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSNP32\NetworkProvider","AuthenticatingAgent","CORP","REG_SZ") IF @ERROR = "0" ? "Changed Authenticating agent registry key to CORP." ELSE ? "Unable to change Authenticating Agent registry key to corp." $ERRORFLAG = "Y" ENDIF
$RC=WriteValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP","Workgroup","CORP","REG_SZ") IF @ERROR = "0" ? "Changed Workgroup registry key to CORP." ELSE ? "Unable to change Workgroup registry key to corp." $ERRORFLAG = "Y" ENDIF
