As a complete novice...

I want to run a script that sets the domain name as Windows 98 clients log in to a Win2000 server.

At the moment students frequently change the default domain name that comes up in the login box, and this obviously creates problems..

Any ideas please?

the change happens before their logon.

Did this a long time ago. Search the registry for your domain name. It was a simple Registry WriteValue. But I do not remember if it took effect immediately or required a reboot.

In the control panel under network setup set the Must be validated by NT domain. (This can also be set by a registr edit. (Do a board search for the exact key.) Then if they change the domain the machine will not let them login.

This has been discussed several times on the board. Try doing a search.

Believe this can all be done by policy.

In your search, look for PUTINENV.EXE and WINSET.EXE..

These variables are also settable in KiX without the use of these utilities.

A few points.

Re Kent's comment,

I am not sure putinenv is helpful in this context. It is a DOS replacement for the kixtart & the KXRPC service. I can't see how that helps.

Re Les' comment,

Yes there are policies for freezing network setting but I believe they all apply to trying to change them through the control panel. I don't believe they apply to changing the domain in the logon box.

In Win9x this can be done but it is painful. You must leave the user no other option but to logon to a legitimate domain.

My distaste for Wintendo is well known so won't rant.

I stand by my belief that policies can do it. When it comes to a school setting however, I suggest you look to Fortres and Cooler to manage them.

Here's what we used at our site to move our 9x machines
code:

$RC = WRITEVALUE("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSNP32\NetworkProvider","AuthenticatingAgent","CORP","REG_SZ")
IF @ERROR = "0"
? "Changed Authenticating agent registry key to CORP."
ELSE
? "Unable to change Authenticating Agent registry key to corp."
$ERRORFLAG = "Y"
ENDIF

$RC=WriteValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP","Workgroup","CORP","REG_SZ")
IF @ERROR = "0"
? "Changed Workgroup registry key to CORP."
ELSE
? "Unable to change Workgroup registry key to corp."
$ERRORFLAG = "Y"
ENDIF
