Okay, here's a question.

I know 95 uses Z: during logon, so you can't map anything to it.

However, does NT do the same? I have a couple users with things mapped to Z:, but they have NT, so I'm wondering ahead of time if I need to change that or not.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you don't have to worry about drive Z on an NT machine.

I base this on the following Microsoft Tech paper.

This paper talks about why 95/98 needs to use drive Z to connect to the NETLOGON share, and implies NT knows where NETLOGON is, and does not need to use a drive letter.

Normally there will not be a Z-drive, but the following things can be possible. Things which are legal.

  • user maps Z-drive for their work and use a persistent settings. after restart the Z-drive letter will already be claim.
  • a helpdesk person needs an incidently mappings, but he forgets to remove it. each time an user logged in persistent settings will not be automatically off.

You can prevent creation of ghost drives by using the command:

code:

if exist c:\winnt\nul net use /persistent:no

Greetings.
