I would like to issue a Policy or registry setting change through Kixtart so users can not change their Desktop background. I keep running into a Security issue when changing or adding the "System" registry entry under Policies in the HKCU tree.

Help,
Thanks

So why do you want to take away the last remaining vestige of freedom the users have left?

I hope you take the bus. If some prop head in my company decided that he wanted to dictate my desktop, his car would not be safe in the company lot.

I had to get that out. What OS?

...from (that guy (that'd be you DOC)) that called (ME (moi)) lockdown Hitler? Shawn probably remembers that thread.

You know guys... you are taking this way too serious {picture Les in out-stretched arms, gesturing for a group huggy wuggy}.

Yep, I remember the thread. Don't have the link, but I remember.

You were locking down something on your users and I said I was glad I was not working at your work. Called you something like Hitler. Don't think you took it too kindly at first, then you realized I was joking with you.

Can't we all get along?

Don't shoot, I'll pull over

swalker4159,
Don't let me scare you off. Granted, I don't approve of that level of dictatorship but hey, it's your whatever...

I asked what OS but I suspect if there is perms issues it is likely Win2K. The next Q then is what NOS. IF AD, than GPOs are probably the best way otherwise you would have to remote to them with an admin script or SU {yuck}.

No prob with NT4 policies...
Just trying to fill in the blanks that swalker4159 left. I don't think NT4 had perms issues in HKCU... new to Win2K.

Perm issues only if he is NOT a GPO policy member in AD.

If he is, he can FORCE a policy back even if a more experienced user were to remove it. In fact (not recommended) but he could force it to re-apply every 30 minutes if or what ever time he wanted.

If he is trying to doing it via KiXtart during logon when the user is not a LOCAL Admin, then yes... he will have issues trying to modify policies on 2000 or XP as the user won't have rights to do that.

Thanks for that walk down memory lane Les.

Boy oh boy... sorry, did not mean for you to think I was really comparing you to him.

I just think of him as such a "controlling" personality.

Sorry stoney [Big Grin]

DOC by stone I mean't as in poker face.... ha ha!

By perms in 2K I assume he is trying reg hacks. 2K tightened up perms so users couldn't simply undo the policy.

I don't think NT4 is as tight. With 4, the users would just figure out by reading the script what reg locs were tweaked and untweak them after logon.

So, you can set the policy in NT4 but the users can undo. That's what I was getting at.

{late breaking news} while I'm tapping this msg out, bbchecker goes budda bing. Another msg from the DOC. News for ya! I was kidding... never took ya serious about that Hitler thing. Sorry for jerkin yer chain.

Friends? {picture Les with out-streched hand}
