Hey guys I'm figuring this stuff out slowly but surely. I have a question and I'm getting confused. I have mostly 98 machines (against my will) and I need to add a new network printer. I got my sendkeys done but I'm getting confused on having the script to check the machine to see if the printer is already installed. I'm just totally confused on how to do this. I've read many posts including the "add orinter on 9x clients!" but my head is still garbage. I know once I see what needs to be done I'll kick myslef in the rear. Thanks for any help.

if @inwin = 1
? "......Please wait......"
If ADDPRINTERCONNECTION ("\\tpaprime01\prt2315") = 0
? "Added printer connection to \\tpaprime01\prt2315 ...."
else
? "Error = @error"
Endif
else
RUN "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHHelpShortcuts_RunDLL AddPrinter"
? "Please Wait"
sleep 1
sendkeys ("{ENTER}")
sendkeys ("~N")
sendkeys ("{ENTER}")
sendkeys ("~P")
sendkeys ("\\tpaprime01\prt2315")
sendkeys ("~N")
sendkeys ("{ENTER}")
sleep 1
sendkeys ("~N")
sendkeys ("{ENTER}")
sendkeys ("~N")
sendkeys ("{ENTER}")
sleep 1
? "Checking Printer..."
endif

You can check the registry for already installed printers.

It's most likely in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers.

We need a FAQ on this!

The current user hive is not available in Win9x during logon.

Well, since AddPrinterConnection() is not supported on Wintendos and shoe-horning printers in with SendKeys() is very site specific, it does not lend itself to a simple FAQ. That said, if someone wants to write one and move(copy) it to the FAQ section, fine.

The real issue however, is not the shoe-horning but the age old issue of load order. That one is covered in the FAQ.

Sorry, all your points are valid but it I had just made essentially the same response to 2 people within a few minutes.

You are quite correct, the current FAQs & manual do answer many question that we see on the forum.

Jack,
I understand your frustration.  That is why Kent and I ressurrected the FAQ.  Now if we could just get people to search the FAQ...

I do see the FAQ quoted often by the regulars.  To bad we cannot get the newbies to use it and the search tools.  I think it all started when McDonalds put in that drive-through.  That is why you will often see the question "do you want fries with that". [Frown]

Sorry that asking a minor(minor/simple to you) question is such a bad thing. To answer your question I am a newbie and I searched the board before posting. The fact that I searched the board and read many responses is where I got/getting confused. I'm sorry it's so hard to get help. Maybe I should find some other place to ask for help since it appears that I'm below some people. Thanks sealeopard at least you responded without negativity.

Clayton: I don't think the negativity was specifically targeted towards you. You did a good job figuring out that SENDKEYS has to be used under Windows 9x to install printers.

However, in general, there are a lot of posts that are unnecessary because
1) there is a FAQ about it,
2) there are already three posts about it,
3) the KiXtart BBS Search has not been used to located the articles in 2),
4) the KiXtart Manual (which comes in CHM, HTMl, DOC, and PDF flavors) has not been consulted
5) barely any information is provided in the question (a la "My car is broken. How do I fix it?")

So, it sometime is pretty frustrating to answer some posts.

Clayton,
I deserved what I got. Shame on me for using you like a pawn to get a point across to Jens and Jack.

'tis my turn to apologize.

Sorry Clayton, Jack, Jens

No problem. We all get a bit frusterated. I was earlier and I apologize for my comments also.

Thanks...
