well, the update exe is just a packaged version of installation procedures.
and it's not bullet proof as it plays with the ok file instead of checking correctly.
for the easy install, you should look at xcopy.
it can keep the files up to date with simple /d switch.
this way, you don't need to worry about any of the stuff, just write one line which checks all files and if not correct, copies the ones not correct.
this should also be like the "ultimate speed" solution.
