I have a Kixtart script on a NT server that runs a shell command to backup the laptop users local 'My Documents' folders when they dock. This script uses a shell command that includes XCopy. It works fine with the Win9x clients but not the WinXP clients. What alternatives to XCopy are there for WinXP workstations?
Thank you.

muto, is there xcopy on xp?
if yes, then the problem just might not be the program but the call for it.

(added missing word: call)

It is possible that XCOPY for XP is using different switches. Check those in both XCOPY versions.

Hello Muto and welcome to the board.

Please post your code so that others may be able to better help you. Also please post what version of KiXtart you're using.

There is a way to do this using offline folders on Windows XP. Just point My Documents to a network folder, move all the files to that folder, then right-click the network folder and choose "Make available offline." Windows XP will take care of all the dirty work (synchronizing the folder when you attach and detach from the network). It works like a charm. Just make your users aware of the impact they will make on your network storage. [Smile]

Normally, the 'My Documents' folder is located within the user's profile. Therefore, if a user logs into the domain with a domain account and the user has a roaming profile, the 'My Documents' folder along with most of the rest of the profiles folder will be synchronized with the network storage. This setup would work for Windows NT/2000/XP.

one should take some caution with roaming profiles though.

I've seen them breaking up really often in some situations and I don't recommend such unless user wants/needs roaming environment.

btw, have anyone else been experiencing this? recent documents (which I keep hidden!) has some file which disables the whole profile...
I think it could be disabled somehow, but haven't minded of searching a resolution.

Alternatives to Xcopy?

Well, for one under 2000/Xp, you have to use the /y switch in batch or scripting. You can use ROBOCOPY from the Resource Kit.. There is XXCOPY.

I also believe there is a UDF that covers this too. Freshfile - Keep client files up to date

HTH,

Kent

Kent's comments cover most points except the Robocopy from NT 4.0 resource kit or higher will not work with Win9x clients but the Robocopy from the NT 3.51 resource kit will work with Win98 clients. My personal favourite is to use the 2 Robocopy versions depending on the client detected.

XXCOPY is very powerful almost strong as the high end MS alternatives.

Muto,

If you want to make a shell to XCopy working on all platforms you can use:

Shell 'Echo y | XCopy ...........'

This solution was posted long ago by Bryce.

If you have a different language installed, like I danish, just include your national character for 'Yes'
I use this:
Shell 'Echo jy | XCopy ...........'

(This works in German too [Wink] )

I would expect it to be:
Shell 'Echo gy | XCopy ...........'
In Finland, what do you say Lonkero ??

-Erik

ps.
Explanation: In Danish and German the word for Yes is (J)a... and in Finnish (G)ylla

erik, just little bit wrong.
the word for yes in here is "kyllä"
anyway xcopy's yes in here is just the same as oversees:
echo y|xcopy ...

almost all tools here use the actual switches.
only problem comes with office code's which are stupidly translated and the unlucky support persons need to remember (I don't! hardly even remember the difference between excel and access) language versions of all keywords including (UK/US) english, swedish, finnish.
and some wksta's even use russian!!!

ok, getting off topic, quitting...

you might even catch me bumbing against some police's trying to keep me away from cameras.
as it's going to be raced in our dear jyvaskylä countryside...

I was close on the Finnish. solution (K=G [Wink] ) It was K(Y)llä

Anyway, trying to keep on topic the switch /Y is not known on Win9x, so you could code like this:
code:
If @Inwin = 1
Shell ' XCopy.........../Y
Else
Shell ' XCopy...........
EndIf

In some situations i have to press ’J’ to answer Yes on the question: Continue:Y/N

Lonkero:
The only Finnish competitions i have been in is the long distance throw of rubber boots, Please Translate WRC
