I just started using KiXtart for domain login scripts and things are going well. I'm now trying to make changes to the registry to lock things down for the user and found a registry key that it will not allow me to change:
WriteValue ("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\Policies\Explorer\", "NoDesktop", "1", "REG_DWORD")

Actually, I can't create any value under Explorer. Access Denied.

Users are logging in our W2K/NT4 domain. There is not a local account on the PC because we have users that roam.

If I add the Domain Users group to the local administrators group, the changes can be made. But I don't think that is a wise move.

Any ideas?

Jay

If you use regedt32.exe to view the security on the key, you will probably find that the user is not permitted to write to it.

The Key you specified is problably addressable via policy. You could also write an "Admin" script that you would execute as a domain admin and remotely set the value you need.

Thanks for the quick reply Howard. Yes, the user only has read access to the key. If we had W2K clients I could apply a group policy, but unfortuately we have all NT 4 clients. I was hoping KiXtart had a secret function to do my task [Razz] . Is this a job for POLEDIT?

Poledit should work great. If you want to do it by script, you can use the HKU/SID method instead of writing to the HKCU. There are some UDFs in the UDF forum that can help with this.
