Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to post information, when questions are asked, about the systems in general.

Like with this post here, I have replyed with reference to the at command in NT/2000.

What happens if the user doesn't have this os?

Would it be useful to have a set information required for a new post?

Does this make any sense?

[Smile]

I agree that it would be good for users to post what operating system(s) they are using, however I don't see a practical way of requiring it.

Also, not all questions need be OS-specific. Discussing UDF construction and standards, for example, do not require additional OS information.

Everyone should learn a general rule:

The answers returned can only be as good as the questions posed.

It might be better if posters at least would list the KiXtart version they're using. Personally, I assume the latest stable version (currently 4.02) if not specified otherwise.
And, yes, I've read the 'assumptions' post [Big Grin]

Dear,

First of all we point to a great topic on FAQ forum

http://81.17.37.55/board/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=000044

which handles about ABC's of KiXtart board etiquette.

Normally we want to know following information:
  • which kixtart version using? in same situations the build version is
    important.
  • which windows client using?
  • what kind of network configuration using? client: w95/W98/ME/NT4/W2K/XP,
server: NT4/W2K in combination with novell netware.
  • is kixtart installed on clients?
  • is for the W95/W98/ME situations KXRPC service installed in a correct way?
  • what is the GOAL of the script?
  • what and when is something going WRONG?
    - during logging on by normal user
    - during logging on as administrator
    - also running script from DOS box
  • what the error message is?
  • are there related topic for this question?
  • can script be put on the board?
Of course: not all questions are in all situations relevant? Above list
is just a checklist to collect enough information for this board to
solve the question.
greetings.

This is such a great topic.. I (personally) am glad this was raised. So many times a person writes "they have a problem," which they are able to describe but with not enough detail..

Who, what, where, when, why and how? [Smile]

Maybe something within the configuration of the board? Fill in the "blanks" kind of thing:
  • Kixtart version
  • Issue, problem, question
  • Things tried, Manual Reference, Post, etc.
  • Expected Result
  • Errors, Messages
  • OS affected
  • Kixtrip, or other utility used to check work?
  • Sample code
(My two pence for thoughts)...
- Kent

MCA,

In the FAQ Section, I believe that Les has done such a thing - ABC's of KiXtart board etiquette .

It is titled - ABC's of KiXtart board etiquette, but really should be - ABC's of board etiquette

However it had to be titled to be specific to what we are doing here.

You maybe right though, we may need to expand on it..

An item of interest.. The first link here is a bit crude and long-winded, but has some good information and is pertinent to this topic. I have already been run this by Shawn, Les, Doc, and Rogier -

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

The main reason for not posting the revised version is that it is still way too long and we have edited it down to be more friendly. However, Les' take on this is much better.

This was originally found at - http://www.analog.cx/

Another intersting link found at http://www.analog.cx/ is - How to Report Bugs Effectively.

Regards,

- Kent

I did have a look at How To Ask Questions The Smart Way (War and Peace edition) and also the Readers Digest version. Unfortunately it is still quite long.
I think the problem is that those that can't (won't) post effectively probably wouldn't read either of them anyway. My new approach with these sort of posts is to either sit on my hands or to direct them to the FAQ.

Les,

I believe that you have addressed this by trimming the fat and making it more user-friendly. I was hoping to solicit more feedback from others in the crowd. [Wink]

Regards,

- Kent
