I don't know if anyone is using my WUS.KIX script to apply WSUS patches on a change-window schedule, but it was updated today to utilize SchTask.exe to manage the restart task. We had experienced some "flakey" operation on Windows 2008 R2 using JT.exe.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this, I wrote a UDF library some time ago that uses the AutoUpdate API. It allows tight control over checking, downloading, and installing updates through WSUS. The sample script can be used to insure updates occur in a specific change window instead of at an approximate time on a daily or weekly basis. Using a scheduled task to invoke the script, you can install updates at a specific date and time, such as "the 4th Thursday of every month at 10pm".

Unlike WSUS/Auto Updates, the script continues to install updates even after the reboot, insuring that all updates are applied in a single change window.

The latest rev is available for download in the Products / Admin Toolchest section of my web site. It includes the library and the ready to use script.

Thanks for sharing Glenn. I've known of it but have not done WSUS in many years - but starting to think about it again. Getting more and more systems I need to manage and doing them manually is annoying and not sure I'm ready to trust automated updates yet.

Thanks Doc!

I have some new treats coming up for the Vault, too. One is a tool to quickly deploy pre-defined perfmon collections to a local or remote system, and another is a utility to perform regular cleanup of system temp, log, and patch uninstall folders. Both can be used without change, other than to their respective configuration file. Both take command-line args for easy configuration.

I just need some time to create the overview documentation.

Look for updates to the tcLib library in the next month or so, too. We've had some issues with JT.exe on W2K8 r2, so the new library will use the COM APIs, but will be a drop-in replacement for the existing UDF library.
