I recall an ad back in 1977 for a "hi-res" video card. 320x256 pixels in 16 colors. They had a bottle of Hires root beer in the ad, something like "hi-res. not Hires!" was the tagline.

Ya wanna talk about gigantic pixels?? ;\)

Strangly, only a year later, a company introduced a video board with something like 2048x1024 resolution in 8 colors, and up to 8 boards could be combined in a system to create overlays. Of course, in those days, your system backplane had up to 24 slots. One application was laying down a map, then roads, then weather symbols, then traffic symbols.. pretty advanced stuff for the 1970's.
