Hi,

I was wondering if there is any way to use the ingroup function if you do not have a domain controller (giant file/print server)?

Thanks

Where do the "groups" live that you want to check using "Ingroup"?

They live on the fileserver itself, our company is rolling out win2k servers and without active directory as file/print servers.

Try:
if ingroup ("Servername\administrators")
? "in there - 1"
endif

OR

if ingroup ("\\Servername\administrators")
? "in there - 2"
endif

The "\\" should not matter

I tried the \\servername\groupname and it didn't work.

I also found that on nt\xp machines it would work providing the group was a local group.

How can you be in a group on another machine unless you have a domain and/or a trust?

Even if the account names are the same, they're not the same account (different SIDs).

We're not logging into the server we're authenticating against the server the workstation username / password matches the server and they can then get access to file/print

mobious, if you are trying to get a generic script running for users in this environment, you have a big problem. I was under the impression you were trying to write an Admin script where you want to check group for a person logging onto the Server.

Without a domain, where are the users logging on? How do you plan to run a script? Without a domain there is no single identity for a user. How do plan on setting up security? There are many questions here.

I tried sitting on my hands, but it didn't work.

Pardon me for saying... but this is a poorly thought oout design that is fraught with problems. I suggest you take it back to the drawing board and rethink it. There, that's said...

If you intend on proceeding with this design, then InGroup will not work for you. You'll have to kludge in a work-around using an INI file. Depending on how many users and groups there are determines how you'd setup the INI file sections. Either name the sections after the groups and add users as keys or visa versa. Then use ReadProfileString() to enumerate.

The reason that they didn't want to use active directory is because I'm the only one familiar with it, I would rather do this with ad but this is what they wanted, I'm just trying to implement it.

The script I have works fine except for specific groups that need specific printers etc.

Thanks for the help

Why not just have a NT pdc sitting by itself at the side?
Your machines can then all be W2k, you wont need AD and you still have your groups.
Of course I have to say, have a bdc there too, just in case. You are going to be a busy person if you are going to stick with what you have.

Your PDC does not have to be your file/print, as long as it is relatively capable of handling NT server.

Yeah, have an NT4 PDC and a smile... don't forget a BDC to do a little C.Y.A for the Admin. And if the network is small enough, having a Win2K domain controller is not a big issue at all... you don't have to use active directory if you don't want to.
