We have a logon script with eight stages. It check to see if you are on a workstation or server and skips certain steps or take an alternate route depending on the outcome.

We have a GUI that is done in KiXforms.NET on all workstations and a simple console window when users logon onto our terminal server. Altogether this takes about 5 to 10 seconds to complete depending on how many outlook signatures the user requires. The outlook signature part is slowing things down. I’ll start cleaning this up soon.

Pre staging step 1 – Call all functions (UDFS’s) that are used in all subscripts.
Pre staging step 2 – Delete kixtart tokencache if the last time is over 7 days ago or never (first run after imaging).
Pre staging step 3 – Check to see if you are on a workstation or server. After this it checks to see if @userid.kix exists. If it does, run it and if not start the server or workstation version of the regular logon script.

Step 1 - Delete all network drives except U: and connect network drives based on user group membership.
Step 2 – Delete all network printers and reconnect printer(s) depending on user group membership. There are two groups for each printer on for default and one for extra printer.
Step 3 - Create an Outlook profile and delete and recreate various signatures for outlook with data pulled from AD depending on user group membership.
Step 4 - Set wallpaper depending on office location and screen resolution. Can be custom for each user when you feel the need to joke around a bit if the user stops smoking or if his favorite football team got slapped silly in last nights game for example.
Step 5 - Set registry values. Among other things this includes some user specific setting for our database application. These settings are taken from an ini file depending on your username.
Step 6 - Delete and recreate various shortcuts depending on group membership.
Step 7 - Record some logon data for admin purposes and to enable some kind of monitoring when and where users logon.
Step 8 - Lets the user know that stuff is done and exits the script.
