Scenario:
We currently use a MS Based Terminal Server Cluster with 15 Servers in it. A user (no specific identified if they users of an particular pattern) logs into the TS and they get just a blank desktop, with no icons.

Having the user Logon/Logoff does not fix it. The solution is to replace the users NTUSER.DAT and let their profile be recreated.

Any ideas as to what the root cause might be? Where I could begin my investigation. I have done the obligatory Google Search, the only hint that I got was an old reference to NT4 and network latency.

When I've have this sort of problem on our Citrix farms it has usually been cause by issues with the user profile as you say.

Does the problem only occur on one of the servers, or on all of them?

Are you useing local profiles or roaming profiles?

Have you checked that there are no errors in the event logs when the user logs on, and just as importantly (if you are using roaming profiles) when they log off?

Are your servers configured to delete local profiles when the user logs off?

The other potential cause is that the user is presented with a desktop while the process which copies the profiles in is stalled - if you leave the desktop for a long time, do the icons eventually appear? I have had similar problems when the login process is trying to re-connect persistently mapped drives which map to a server that is down.

I have not gathered any info on specific servers (will start doing that today). With that said, no we have not checked the event logs (another thing to add to the list).

These are roaming profiles and yes we delete local profiles at logoff.

As for waiting on an empty desktop, not to my knowledge but then again, it is usually a hurry up and fix it scenario so that they can get back to work.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will start with those and see what we can find. I will follow up next with more information.
