Getting the hang of it

Hey,

In my short time here i've found there is alot of information on the boards, but it can be difficult to track down. I think a good solution would be a Wiki.

I think it would be a more effective medium for holding advanced information on things such as UDF's and Builtin commands. It would have the advantage of allowing more people to contribute examples for said commands, which are a bit lacking as is for us beginners!

For example, a page could be called 'Arrays'. It would contain basic information on what arrays are and what their purpose is. It would contain the builtin commands with extensive examples on how to create an array, read and write data to an array, and how to modify it in more advanced ways with other commands and extra functionality given via UDF's. If a user was interested in the commnand 'FOR EACH ', they could click the link and find themself at a page with even more examples and specifics on the command.

Or, an article on 'Error Handling', which explains the error handling capibilities of Kix, and best practices of doing so, with plenty of examples.

Hope you get the idea!

Don't get me wrong, i think the forums and community are great, but i dont think it's a great medium to hold more 'static' information on Kix usage. Sure there is a Manual with quite alot of info in it, it isn't exceedingly indepth. Have a look at the 'Arrays' section, for a System administrator with not much programming experience it brushes over the topic without much explination of how you can go about modifying the data in an array using other commands, and does not provide many examples.

What do you guys think?

Luke

Actually, we've got the Kixtart Learning and Script Vault forums that are tightly moderated, and ideal for this purpose. I'm moderating the Vault, and would love to put pieces of code there that illustrate specific concepts such as these, not just complete example scripts.

If you guys (ie - anyone!) would be willing to do some of the ground work, such as:
  • create an outline or complete how-to document;
  • submit ideas (please - be thorough, do some research, and create an outline of key points);
  • point out posts within KORG that deserve placement in these forums

I would certainly welcome the assistance. You can send these to me via PM or email.

I've been scanning KORG as well as my own scripts in my spare time, but "spare" time has become very limited recently. If you are willing to do some of the ground work (research, outline, etc.), I'll make the time to create and maintain the posts.

Glenn

My eyes deceived me... I thought the title said "kiwiki" (pronounced Quicky) ... With Shawn and his sheep around here, you have to be careful of that stuff. ;\)

The vault sounds good, however i have to wonder how well it would scale with threads (as it begins to take up multiple pages of threads). I suppose it could work well if kept 'topic' orientated. Although i personally prefer the wiki approach, as everything 'links', there are links within pages to other pages relevant to parent page. I suppose a stickied parent thread which acts as a sort of index would be a way around presenting the the child threads in a friendly manner.

Well if you need a hand with anything lemme know, although my kix knowlege is still lacking. However i suppose i could share which topics i find currently confusing as a newcommer who is doing alot of logon / user account type orientated work, so that info threads could be perhaps made.

Hi lukeod and thanks for offering to help.

This topic has come up before and the biggest issue really is non participation.

Yeah, didn't someone already start a Wiki?
