Jochen Jochen KiX Supporter Registered: 2000-03-17 Posts: 6380 Loc: Stuttgart, Germany	Yay Ron, last year around the same time I saw a really great geminid meteor on a very clear and cold night driving home from visiting my father in the ICU. This was simply stunning, I almost ran off the road watching this one (it was visible almost 1 1/2 seconds). I hope we have a clear night this year $\:\)$ _________________________

Mart Mart KiX Supporter Registered: 2002-03-27 Posts: 4673 Loc: The Netherlands	Several years ago on holiday in France we rented a house in the middle of the Dordogne region and one night we sat in the garden looking up and watched satellites go by (very bright lights moving really fast) and there were also one or two falling stars. It was a clear night after a d#mn hot 35+C day and we watched for hours. Will see if there is something to see the 13th and 14th. Jochen Jochen KiX Supporter Registered: 2000-03-17 Posts: 6380 Loc: Stuttgart, Germany	All I know is that we (the earth) cross the trajectory of two comets, each year at around the same time; In august it is the trajectory of P/Swift-Tuttle, and in december it is the trajectory of Phaeton. Crossing this particle trace results in 'catching' these particles, which, caused by their very high speed (around 35-60 km/sec) and the friction, die down and cause the air along their trajectory to glow. First time I saw a perseid shower peak was back in 1993 after it was announced in a radio show I incidentally heard. Lol, it was 3am, I sat outside our house and was totally stoned ... I was getting ready for the show that evening with a friend (lawn chairs, toaster oven eggrolls, etc.) and at around 9pm when it was still sunny outside and the sky was still blue, I saw this massive fireball enter the atmosphere with a smokey explosion that shattered the object into five pieces. The main object left a trail of gray smoke behind a bright red, orange, and yellow trail. It must have been streaking through the sky for about 6 seconds before it went past a tree-line and I lost sight of it.
