I hope one of you guys can help me...

Apologies if I have got the wrong forum...but...this is 'sort of' KiX related! :-) If you feel it should be moved to an alternative forum then please feel free to move it.

Anyway...

I am using KiX for our logon script and recently we have purchased our first Windows Vista clients.

When KiX executes it automatically adds the necessary shared printers (from our print/file servers) using the AddPrinterConnection() and SetDefaultPrinter() functions.

When these functions are called Windows Vista stops executing the logon script and displays the following message...

 Quote:
To use the shared printer \\<server>\<print_queue>, you need to install the printer driver on your computer. If you do not recognize or trust the name and location of the printer, do not install the driver.

What I would like to know is how to disable this message and automatically install the drivers on the Vista clients.

Ideally I would like to leave other Windows Vista security warnings with their default settings.

I have looked through all the Group Policy settings and I can’t find anything obvious regarding this.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

Lee

I was just re-reading one the links in my original thread and saw this. It's supposedly a workaround... but man... what a joke.

 Quote:

Update: A Solution

1. In Vista PC’s go to “Control Panel” - “Printers” - “Add printer”.
2. Believe or not, click “Add a local printer” (I know you want to add a network printer but that way it doesn’t work).
3. Click “Create a new port” - “Local Port” - “Next”
4. In the next box you have to enter a port name like this: \\PC name\Printer name where “PC name” is the network name of the XP PC where you have the printer and “Printer name” the network name of that printer. Be careful with this names - you can double-check by viewing the PC in “Network Places.”
5. Finish the wizard and enjoy your UAC-free network printing!

Allen,

Many thanks for your prompt reply!

I'm going to read that thread in more detail shortly, but it 'appears' that my issue is a little different from yours.

In my case, creating the printer tcpip port doesn't "seem" to be a problem, it's the printer drivers themselves that seem to have the problem. Well, that's what the message suggests to me!

I'll test it again shortly and add a @SERROR in my code to try and see what message KiX returns.

Thanks again,

Lee

Does the print server have the Vista-specific digitally signed printer drivers installed?

Sealopard,

Many thanks for your reply.

It does have the digitally signed printer drivers.

Anyway, I found a solution to my problem, so I thought I would post the answer so that anyone else who 'suffers' the same problem can benefit from this.

To prevent the "Install Printer Driver?" dialogue box on Windows Vista edit the following GPO...

     User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Printers

Edit the "Point and Print Restrictions" policy.

There are two "Security Prompt" settings...

     - "When installing drivers for a new connection"
     - "When updating drivers for an existing connection"

Set both of these to "Do not show warning or elevation prompt".

My KiX logon script now creates the appropriate printer connections without prompting the users.

Problem solved! ;-)
