Guys,

We have a small problem.
Recently we added/acquired a small call center. All systems have OpenOffice installed. By default the option to check for update is on on each system. This screws up our proxy server and therefore all other users get a slow or no internet connection \:\(

I used regshot to see what changes when this option is en/disabled. No luck. I also used filemon to see if it writes to a file. Also no luck. I see it accessing the onlinecheck dll but no files are modified that i can link to some kind of settings file for OpenOffice.

Anyone did some scripting on OpenOffice or knows how to disable the online update check in OpenOffice in some kind of automated way? Sure I can visit each machine but if there is a way to automate some stuff with lets say a kix script it that would be great.

Why not go for an AutoIt solution while researching?

Another quickie is to find out which addresses it tries to connect to and point them to 127.0.0.1 in the clients HOSTS file.

I’m totally new to AutoIT. Will do some testing and see what I can come up with.

Or try to see what happens with the WinInstall 2003 LE which is free for download (at least it was back then....)

But the 127.0.0.1 at hosts file is good, although one cannot script that to that file \:\)
I've tried to in different languages, reading the file works fine, writing to the file won't. (due to the fact that it's got no extention.)

Also you can disable the update feature during installation Disable Online Update
Auto Update / Online Update is automatically disabled when using OpenOffice-Enterprise (build 505 or later).

I wish Kix had more Autoit-like features built in.

Not positive and have not looked (tried to get some of the systems out on the line to use Open Office but they didn't like it so we put MS Office back in)

My guess though is that either an XML file or JS file controls it.

Yeah. I was already looking at that this afternoon after I crashed and burned several times during some tests. If this is true then it would be easy to setup a default xml or js file and just copy that file to all system running OpenOffice. It's 11:15 PM (23:15) here so I'll do some more searching and test when I'm back @ work tomorrow. I'll post my progress.

I know and that's just where it got screwed up. Not all system are installed in the same way. Some systems are polling for an update 14.000.000 times in just two days \:o If nothing works we might just schedule a day to walk by all the systems and do a reinstall.

Imho it kinda sucks that OpenOffice has limited registry settings to do some basic config stuff and no adm files so one could make a GPO for it.

Indeed, if you knew the registry settings though you could make your own adm files.

I dl-ed WinInstallLE (the free version) and created a custom MSI package that has the online update add-on with that nice red cross in front of it so it is not installed when one chooses to do a default install. This means we need to visit each machine but if that solves the problems with our proxy server I'm happy to do that. It’s just a one time thing all new systems are installed with the default OpenOffice setup option which as of now has online update disabled and therefore it does not get installed unless you choose to install it.

Unfortunately there are no JS or XML config files that control the settings for this as far as I can see. Also no registry settings are available to control the online update add-in.

That works too, but I ment for you to see what changes when u manually disable it \:\) for instance: take snapshot b4, change auto update, make after snapshot and see what changes.

Nope. They are on 2.1. I've seen some stuff about upgrading to 2.2 should solve the online update check still being active even when the checkbox is unchecked.

I did some stuff with that in the past but did not really find it easy and clear to see what happens. Also they say it requires a fresh install with each app you want to monitor the installation process for. Maybe I just need to make myself more familiar with it but not that much time to play around with stuff right now.

Doesn't need a clean install really. Also Flexnet (formerly known as installshield) allows you to download an evaluation version of their adminstudio. I use that for years now and it shows me every change a program makes. It's made for repackaging but I like to use it to capture registry settings and file changes as well.

Have you tried it on Vista yet? I've tried a couple registry monitoring tools on Vista and they choked and did not provide full/accurate details.
