Witto Witto MM club member Registered: 2004-09-29 Posts: 1828 Loc: Belgium	While creating a new image for computers, I received the question to install a default screensaver. So I started hacking the ntuser.dat in the Default User profile ("C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\ntuser.dat"). In the key "Control Panel\Desktop" for the entry "SCRNSAVE.EXE" I entered the value "C:\WINDOWS\System32\ss3dfo.scr" But on creation of a new userprofile, the value defaults to "C:\WINDOWS\System32\logon.scr" Has anybody any experience installing a default screensaver in the default user profile?

Allen Allen KiX Supporter Registered: 2003-04-19 Posts: 4574 Loc: USA	I don't know what the "Right" way to do it is... but when I used to make images, I used to log in with a local account (not administrator) and make any changes that I wanted. Then reboot, and log in as Administrator. Go to System Properties\Advanced\Profiles and copy the profile I made the changes to, to "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User", and then change the permissions to "Everyone". Then from that point forward all new accounts are created with desktop, screensaver, power options, etc that you defined in that desktop. Seems to me this was suggested at http://www.appdeploy.com/, but I can't be sure. You might check that site out. _________________________ (... better days ahead)

Save the whole profile under \WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol\your.domain.com\scripts\Default User ( = \\YOURDC\NETLOGON\Default User). Set Read rights for Domain Users. For existing profiles, you can use the GPO: User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display\Screen Saver executable name Edited by masken (2007-03-30 01:14 PM) _________________________ The tart is out there

Les Les KiX Master Registered: 2001-06-11 Posts: 12734 Loc: fortfrances.on.ca	We set the screensaver via GPO and lock it down so users cannot change or disable it. This was a SOX requirement. The question as it was asked to me was not to make a restrictive policy for the screensaver (like a GPO would do) but just to set the screensaver as the computers will be first deployed and delivered to the user. If a restrictive screensaver was needed, I would go for a GPO. I know I can copy a profile over the default user profile, but for one or another reason I don't like this way of working. I think I have some bad experiences with images that were made and configured by too many admins. Overwriting the default user was also common practice and made all possible rollback to be gone. I hoped to get some more influence on the default user profile with the possibility to roll back if the changes made would show up issues or errors.
