So I activated a test group of PC's to install IE7 via WSUS. All of them now have problems, IE7 won't start at all, even when started without addons (no fuzzy addons installed either, jsut the regular Adobe Reader and Sun Java). The IE app flashes by and closes.

Anyone with experience?

The exact same issue happened to all of my 5 test PC's, so something must be seriously wrong. Perhaps the WSUS download was corrupted?

Anyhow, I downloaded the standalone installer and installed that over the WSUS install on one of the PC's, and after that IE7 works. One strange notice about this was the the standalone installer didn't recognize any IE7 installation at all, not that I know if it should or not...

I've used the wsus installed copy on all 19 servers/workstations at home without issue, except for a minor configuration change that was blocking access to the VMWare console client. Tabbed windows took some getting used to without closing the window - a few "Oh S*!t" later and I learned to close just the tabs.

We're blocking the IE7 install at work as it is not compatible with several home-grown HTTP-based apps. We're waiting for the next release of the app before we migrate over.

Some additional info I forgot to mention:

My clients does not have administrative privs.
My clients does not have the capability to download unsafe content off the Internet (controlled by IP-addresses).
All running fully patched WinXP SP2 machines, almost all PC's are HP desktops.

What language are you running xp on?
and I'd guess that the wsus is not on the internet-connection :).
Did a quicksearch for any requirements regarding a push from wsus, but didn't come up with one.

I don't think it has anything to do with WSUS. I did a small implementation with WSUS and did not have any problems besides the fact that I forgot to disable the popup blocker in a GPO on two systems that needed it.
As said maybe the download in WSUS was fubar some reason.

No, I haven't updated the GPO with IE7 policies yet. But I doubt that this would cause IE7 to crash.

I just made an extra GPO for IE7 settings. The IE7 GPO exists besides the IE6 GPO. For now it's just a small number of computers that have IE7. All others still have IE6 and therefore use the GPO we have for IE6.

Masken - try to fix a gpo for it, somehow I think you're missing a setting that it's expecting or something ;\) I'll almost spend some money on that guess ;\)

Hi,

I fixed the install problems by applying company wide reinstall of all workstations so OWA is working.

Next problem IE7 is not using the proxy settings from GPO I hope someone have an idée to fix this one.

@Björn, yes it's an idea, but the thing is I got IE7 working by using the standalone setup and install it over the WSUS install, after that it works.

@pvds, you have to update the GPO with an updated inetres.adm. Ie, open the GPO with GPMC on a machine that has IE7 installed.

Also, IE7 sets proxy settings per machine instead of per user:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555850

Anyhow, I've opened up a MS PSS case on this. So far nothing since the guy helping me is a real newbie... (you should see the dialogue.. it's scaring). Just waiting for next level support... I think it might have something to do with the WGA. \:\/

Funny thing is, http browsing through Windows Explorer works, lol ;\)
