Guys! The topic is whether we could be better served with a forum dedicated to login scripts, not a redesign of the forum structure, or who is what kind of mod - or not. Nor is it a place to whine about anything, real or imagined.

Can we all just do a yea/nay on the idea of a login script forum?

Again, my two points were
1. Kix is a login script processor at heart - as such we probably should have a dedicated forum.
2. It's the first way most people get introduced to Kix, usually by inheriting some login script they know nothing about. It would be the logical first place to go to ask questions and look for examples.

Ok - Nay.

My reasons are:
  • It's another forum to confuse people where to post.
  • Scripting problems and queries are most often about general techniques and rarely something that is unique to a login script.
  • I'd bet most posts will get a "Search/Check this post in the FAQ/Scripts/Starters forum" responses.

I'd recommend a (locked) "Login Scripts" sticky or FAQ with pointers to useful posts - for a newb, a single post with links to best-of-breed solutions and information is more useful than a forum full of variable quality posts.

I thought the idea died long ago and we were just using this topic to pump posts. If it isn't dead yet, let me pump a couple more bullets into it.

Rename the starters forum and keep it simple. I don't like community sites with lots of forums like these for example:

http://www.vmware.com/community/index.jspa?categoryID=1
http://www.vmug.nl/modules.php?name=Forums

For a noobie maybe not, but if you're looking for a specific answer that type of layout is good and direct to the point.

If you had thousands of posts of all types of nature in 2 or 3 forums it makes it more difficult to find good data. On the other hand if you like to read most or all posts then it makes it a PITB as they are a bit too specialized.

Well, I agree with that. Maybe I didn't choose the right examples. But there are communities with lots of forums which hardly differ from each other...

I like Rad's proposal

Hey, that's great - you've almost got the complete starters FAQ / sticky there. All you need now is to include the links to the posts that deal with these issues and you're done - no need for additional forums at all ;\)

rads sectioning shows how hard it can be to differentiate between the two categories by task.

all of these can be an issue/task inside an admin script.

@Glenn
Nay - I belive that the information all exists entangled in this forum, and a learning-round regarding (more or less a howto, but in a educational way..) a aproved structure or recommended would be better, and just hang a sign on the Learning forum, it's way to quiet in there regarding very new people.

I still think that mod(s) of general should move script-questions 'n stuff to starters/scripts etc.. It falls into those cats within the criteria. Could give my aye to renaming 'em to something more 'flashy' tho.

Now, when I open this forum, it is like opening the scripting forum & I feel out of place.

this is an exact copy of what is in my head.

Maybe new forums are needed, but renaming the "Starters" would IMHO be a good thing. Too many simple questions appear in "Scripts" or "General Discussions" because too many people think "Hey, I am no starter". Maybe they are right...
"General KiXtart Questions" or so could be nice.

Listening to the suggestions and will probably discuss all of this further with the other Admins and Moderators in the next week or two and probably upgrade to UBBT 7.1B5 which has many fixes and restores some of the missing features we used to have in the previous version.
