Lonkero Lonkero KiX Master Guru Registered: 2001-06-05 Posts: 22346 Loc: OK	I've been searching for high and low the right codec that would allow me to play mp3 streaming or shoutcast streams on my windows mediaplayer. not sure which installation finally fixed it but have installed about everything I could find. - ffdshow - klite codec pack - nimo codec pack - real alternative just to name a few. iirc, klite didn't add anything but removed a huge bunch of stuff as incompatible. any of you guys know, what's the exact codec to install? _________________________ ! download KiXnet

You can use a sniffer to grab the actual download location if needed to help get a file to check the codec. As for klite - well from most forums that get into that type of stuff, typically say to stay away from codec "packages" as they often make things worse for your comp.

I'll test it on a freshly installed laptop with only WINXP and updates. [update] Works fine on a newly installed laptop as well, no codecs or extra programs installed whatsoever, only a clean Windows XP with updates from ms. masken masken MM club member Registered: 2000-11-27 Posts: 1222 Loc: Gothenburg, Sweden	Never install any so called "codec packs", they just mess up your OS and makes it slower & unstable by loading alot of DLL's that you don't need. ffdshow is really almost all you need for playback. If you want to install a codec or filter, use it's original installer. This problem wouldn't normally be codec or filter-related, but with all those packs installed, anything could have happened really. To see how mp3's are decoded you can use a tool like DXMan or GSpot It would be interesting to see if you get it working with Winamp. I think Winamp uses an internal filter for MP3's (ie, it could be some proxy or other networking issue). Edited by masken (2006-11-21 11:52 PM)

Lonkero Lonkero KiX Master Guru Registered: 2001-06-05 Posts: 22346 Loc: OK	lol. yes, winamp works fine. the issue is that windows media player DOES NOT SUPPORT mp3 streams. so, it's a codec for sure. question is, like it originally was, what's the codec/directshow filter reguired. one nice thingie is that mplayerC can't play the stream either on that machine and gives the stream GUID. when I click on the link to look for codec it gives me a page that sql debug output. looking on the web gives dudes like me asking and folks answering similar answers. like "it must be you are missing ogg vorbis" or "you clearly don't have AAC filter" or "you have installed a codecpack. uninstall it and install this cooler one." weird how hard it is to find real knowledge on these issues.

If you get off the PC and go to the MAC you don't have to worry about it. You just can't play it period. It is rather complex because anyone can write a CODEC and use it and not need to follow any "standard". It's own popularity makes it it's own standard. The more people that use it to create works and then publish with it the more other people have to find, download, and install a new codec to play the music or video. It would not play on my WMP 11 so I uninstalled 11, rebooted and it now plays with 10. Maybe some security measure? Not sure Jooel.

masken masken MM club member Registered: 2000-11-27 Posts: 1222 Loc: Gothenburg, Sweden	Lonk, before you lol-away any more in your wmp confusion, have you even bothered to check which filter or codec that has the highest priority in your OS, and thereby handles the mp3 playback for wmp? Also, have you checked the security and proxy-settings in wmp? Uninstall that messed up codec pack you've installed and hope that it returns everything to normal (which is one of the reasons NOT to install crap like that to begin with). Yes, you probably have and that has fcked up the codec/filter priorities in the OS. Provided you've got a working driver and DirectX installed, that is the most likely explanation. I have like 10 machines in test and only 1 has codec pack installed. and only one of them plays the stream (different machine, of course). the problem is, I have no idea what is the difference between these machines. that is, why the one machine works and the others don't. coming back, it has nothing to do with the codec pack or with the fact that you can't read. _________________________ ! download KiXnet
