Wow! We stopped by to see our Daughter in College today and she asked me to
help her fix some stuff on her computer.

I went and downloaded a driver package and it was done in like 20 seconds.
That surprised me so I went and checked her speed and found that she is on
at about 26MB Download and 19MB Upload.

Hmmm... Maybe I should go back to school for a while

I guess they're supposed to have this high speed to do "school work"
but all of them just use it for games, YouTube, e-Bay, etc...
What a waste, give me some of that bandwidth

I'm stuck with about 3MB Download and 256K Upload. The download speed is okay most
of the time, but the upload speed really sucks.

When you get up into those sort of speeds, you have to wonder who's speed you're testing, yours or the speedtest site.

You whining about 3MB but actually I bet it is more like 3mb. At work 3mb is what we have to share with thousands of users. Until this year, at home I only had 26.4kb dialup and even now have only 512kb.

We have another WISP putting up a 330 foot tower near my house and they will be offering 3mb. I will have to take a drive and see how it's coming along. They had about 100 feet up yesterday.

In town, I have a 6mb down/800kb up DSL with a block of IPs. If it were not for all the trees around my house, I would beam it here wirelessly. I would need a 60 foot tower to get the signal.

are we talking about 3MBit or 3MByte? If byte, then this is about five times more than i have here. And i used to consider that highspeed .

Accepted standard is Byte = Big B, bit = small b.

Maybe this standard is accepted by those who know, but there are enough who dont.

And even you obviously have your doubts when talking to another admin:

Ja, but Ron should know!

How can you infer from that quote that I have any doubts? In fact, I was correcting Ron on his misuse of uppercase. To my defense, I wish to enter into evidence this post dated 2006-09-14.

Yeah, he "should" know. So, you're not sure. Ergo, you have your doubts.
And i had my doubts about what we are talking about.

The judge can't enter evidence to his defence.

Actually I don't have a doubt. Generally, I don't bet on something I have doubts about. I was just being gentle with DOC. Remember, I'm supposed to be nice to him since he worked so hard to reinstate me and fix the board.

I may be judge, jury, and executioner to some, but to your accusation, I am merely a defendant.

Come on Ron, 'fess up already so this trial can end.

Okay I confess. I was not using the correct case.

Still, an amazing speed compared to mine.

Being able to transfer at 25mbps for download and 19mbps for upload is great.

As for naming I suppose that too is not really as standardized as one may think.

Some use Mbps and some use mbps, in many interfaces it is converted again
from kbps to KBps

The IEC would like you to use MiB but so far it has not gotten any real
usage in the industry.

well, the mibs and kibs are actually used in the open source community but they are used wrongly in there too.

so introducing that i in there does not help.

anyways, afaik, it was ment to help in the confusing part of M meaning Mega and Million.
MiB should mean millions of bytes.
that is, if I remember it correctly.
thus, the first place these thingies should be used are the covers of hard drives.

Well not sure how much this site is an "authority" but they seem to have a
reasonably good explanation of the issue if it really matters that much to anyone.

Not like we're in class here, but whatever...

wow, that's a nice speed indeed only have 24/8 via cable, and this week 8/1 via adsl (32/9 if I manage to find or set up a router that handles shaping and handeling two isps)

well, the speed ain't that tremendeous.
I had 10/10 synched connection in my last apartment in jyväskylä.

the reason why it was that slow was that they had built neighborhood with so few coppers that they had to limit the bandwidth to let everyone browse fast.

anyways, it's lot more than my current 520/200 and lot faster than I can afford.

I probably should not mention that at my place of work we have 30 MegaByte Up/Down

And at home I am averaging 6 MegaByte down and 4 up.
