Well Vista RC1 now runs much more of my hardware but not all of it. Still doesn't work with my Firewire and one of my RAID controllers. It works with one but not the other.
Doesn't fully support my SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS either.

Played with it for a couple days, but the baby is still a pig on resource usage and due to lack of all my hardware support I can't use it for my production use.

Back to XP Pro again for now.

Agreed. Vista seems to have issues with soundcard overall. Only tried it on my old laptop, and it almost killed it - sound is not stable, wakeup-calls from sleepmode / other modes doesn't really work correctly etc. Did you try it with all the fancy 3d-stuff on?

One cannot assume that WinXP drivers will work flawlessly on Vista.

Regarding all other applications, many manufacturers who has up to now written sloppily regarding security will have to rewrite them because of the "new" security models (which has been there since NT4 but haven't been forced).

Oh I agree that is the issue. Drivers are just not ready for it yet, but then again it is RC1.

When we went from NT 3.51 to NT4 that was a pain too and it took a long time to get drivers for everything, but after about a year it was getting hard to find drivers for NT 3.51

The auto RunAs asking for Admin like Linux is cool.

Just too many oddities for now for me to bother with. Over all aside from more security and more eye candy not much there that XP doesn't already do for me.

Well you would be wrong there. XP has many enhancements that 2000 does not have.

WMI is much more capable, memory management is greatly improved, better IRQ sharing, enhanced kernel changes,Shadow Copy Service, etc...

VISTA I'm sure has a ton of technical updates, just saying on the surface I don't get anything on my home system with Vista that I really HAVE to have.

I'll just have to wait and see.
It's downloading now. Only 3 hours and +/- 10 minutes to go. It says that -20% is done. -20% Oh well some kind of bug or weird thing because of the size of the file I guess.

For who is interested in a copy of Windows Vista RC1, you can get it from MS here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

I've been running the RC for the past week and must say its not all that exciting.

In fact, I just found something for XP called the Vista Transformation Pack. Check it out...

I ended up uninstalling it... and then reinstalling it without the Glass thingy... the glass theme is neat... but not very pratical when you've got a bunch of screens behind the one you are reading.

can't set my taskbar height!

xp was a bitch originally with my theme (had to enlarge the taskbar everytime I rebooted) but now can't get it to increase at all.

It gave me 227% done when it was only half downloaded LOL Must be the file size. I went to bed last night when it was about halfway done. Will burn it tonight and see if I can find a suitable computer to install it on.

k, found out a way to do it:
- unlock the taskbar
- change the start button to normal (normal thin won't work either)
- resize the taskbar
- lock the taskbar
- set the startbutton back to vista mode

huh.
it's even harder than before installing the transformation pack.
and I bet it will happen every time I boot the system, like before.
huge lot of clicking...

nah, rc should always remain non-working.
otherwise it would be rtm. imho.

anyways, this transparency tool in the transformation pack is quite ugly when you have many windows open. then it just keeps on flashing... a lot.
