Since everyone seems to be admitting to asking dumb questions tonight ... what the heck are these Nano-itx boards anyways - never heard of them. Is it just that they're super small (they dont seem to be super-fast) ... what kind of chipset they have ? Are they meant to run some kind of *nix OS ?

Who cares about nano-ITX. I want one of those quantum computers, they even work when completely switched off!

See Quantum computer solves problem, without running

dunno if it's a stupid question or not... but it's not monsters. They do run fine on win as well as linux, these boards are made by via, and therefore got their cpu's and north/southbrigdes. video comes for some boards from s3 what I know of.

that's what I use my mini-itx board for ^^; there are boards with dual lan-controllers tho, perfect for running as routers etc etc =)

do you really need to get one? it should do all stuff without you having it, since it operates without beeing powered "on"

it's nice to know that quantum physics are mysterious stuff.
but having a quantum computer... well.
jens can keep on dreaming. I don't see this stuff in practise before the year 2102.

what comes to these via boards, exactly.
their usage is so limited.
they are basically consumer targeted industru computers.
but instead of intel stuff inside they are based on via stuff.

if you have lack of room, fine.
but my htpc's will still be running on old AT cases.
call me old fashioned, if you wish.

and routers, mail servers, proxy and all other servers I can make out of my old pentium and pentium 2 dinosauric relics.
and all those will cost me is the time to put the freebsd install cd in... and maybe some more...

Yes, dreaming is nice, and I hope Jens do keep on dreaming for us all so we will all end up with quantum-puters

The only reason to get a board like this is when your tight on space. AND wish to have something that doesn't consume that much power.
I do hope that you use atx-cases for your htpc's - otherwise you're more brave then I will ever be

My only reason for investing in a mini-itx board was that I didn't like wasting so much space as my other computer did, and I found a old NES, butchered it and crammed the itx-board into it.

I know, the price versus functionallity is... I run all my other things on older machines, they don't consume that much power, doesn't warm up the room to much, and since I have all that kind of stuff in a 19" rack - I don't need to save that much space.. (only fuses when I'm stupid enough to connect the vacuumer to the same fuse as ... yeah.. *poff* )

In shops they ca be used under the counters. Usually there is not much space there and they do not need to be super fast.

I would not buy one cause I personally do not like these ultra small pc's.

the idea of small is nice.
near passive cooling (read, really silent system) is nice too.

but if it means loosing huge amounts of computing power, well... I can buy an XBox then, right?

I truly dislikes xbox. But yeah, xbox should do the job as well.
And there is plenty of fanless itx-boards out there for silent operation.
(You've got a bonus with a xbox, you can play games adapted to your plattform and sysconf )

hey, is this board small enough to fit into Glenn's missing green and yellow fin Rocket?
