Has anyone deployed a Linux LAMP server before? If so, have you deployed it with Joomla?

Thanks!!

No, but I deployed two clarinet lamps, and a trombone lamp in my living room...

Actually - did 3 of the 4, but not together.. I use Linux and Perl extensively in an automated NOC application I developed, and Apache is our product of choice for Unix based web servers, but not on Linux yet. We're an Oracle/DB2 shop at work, and I only use SQL Server at home, so no MySql.

Linux + Apache + MySql + Perl/PHP = LAMP

A web application server based entirely on freeware. 100% sheep-free!

Afaik Joomla is sort of like Mambo (a ready for use component based web site).

More info on Joomla.com but it's down for now.

If Kixtart.org did go that way, at least I would have another peer to bounce questions off of, however,... Not a good justification for changing KiX site.

I already host my companies website on a Win2003/IIS6/ASP server, but the decision makers liked the work of a web developer sooooo much that they hired him and didn't care to ask about what system he develops on. I now have to implement a Linux LAMP server. I just went to my first Linux SuSE training class. ....My opinion after the fact??? I'll stick with Windows as much as I can, but I'll get the Linux server to work.

kixtart.org facelift with anything.

I have never taken any linux classes and still some ppl consider me as expert.
simply installing a system with the "LAMP" definition is simple as installing windows 98.
some choices after starting the LiveCD and then it's running...

Lonk, If you have references to share or How-To's please post them. The class I attended was a basic "get to know" SuSE linux. I still need to bridge the gap between that, and a fully functional LAMP server.

Thanks!

well, you won't learn the needed stuff like that.
you have a goal, set up a server with some requirements.
you can do it that the easy way or the hard way (which I like)

easy way is to install a redhat or debian or gentoo or some other well packaged system.
redhat and debian might be the easiest ones.
in a gui environment you select that you want this and that piece ( you know these pieces as you know that you want apache etc...)
with a gentoo you would go after the initial install with "me wanna install apache" commandline and it does it for you.

now, setting up the system is not the issue.
a baby can do that.
the issue is to configure it so it's not a security hole.
and that knowledge you won't learn in any normal classes.
I'd say, TLDP.org is your source of information numero uno on that.

on the other hand, if you have firewalls in place etc, the baby-can-do systems are basically all you need.

what is the developer running the site in? I have found very little web stuff that can't run on a win32 based system these days.

My site, Isorg.com i got perl, php, a mysql backend shopping cart/online catalog... and several "linux support only" packages running, and it is a win2003 server.....
