Well Linux can also run many Windows applications too if you want or must go in that direction. Don't forget that with a little WINE you can grow quite a vine of Windows apps too.
http://www.winehq.com/ The LAMP spoken of also works the other way too as I've run it myself in the past too and it works great. So, you can support if either way you want really.
WAMP Windows+Apache+MySQL+Perl
Bottom line - both platforms support running the tools/applications you speak of SWK.

bryce, I wouldn't leave apache out of the list. runs fine on windows.
yeah that is my point i guess... just wondering why what sounds like a mostly Windows shop is now being forced to support a linux box because a developer says so

This has been a Paul Revere style project, initiated and lobbied by non-technical people. The decision to go with this system was concrete before I ever caught wind of the project. The prevailing attitude is, "Make it work".. LOL, I've never had this happen before.. My response, "I'll make it work.... And work GOOD!"
Taking the Linux class sure was an eye opener though. I learned a lot about how different another OS can be from the windows platform. It's also been an interesting case study on the affects of OS development in an open source market. I'm glad windows has stayed away from the whimsical naming conventions that Linux has. Bash (Bourne Again Shell) Korn-shell, C-shell, YaST (Yet another setup tool)... The list goes on and on. I'm sure there are others out there that are really into Linux and have a great time with all these cute names. But from my perspective, its all new, and not intuative to associate these creative names to the function they serve.
