Hey guys..

Had an issue come up today and only seeing it at one site and on three machines (so far).

Quote:

KiXtart main executable
Event signature
EventType: lnPageError P1: c000020c P2 0000004

Error Report Contents
C:\DOCUME~1\mfreeman\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER5261.dir00\WKIX32.EXE.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\mfreeman\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER5261.dir00\appcompat.txt

KiXtart version (WKIX32.EXE) is:
4, 50, 0, 0 (4.50.0.0) - Build 196

Users "call" the script from AD (Profile/Login script) -
wkix32 newscript\kixtart.kx

Users are on Windows XP.

Thanks,

Kent

I have yet to learn how those file actually help me troubleshoot those types of issues. There should be a debugging porcess somewhere that uses them.

I did a system restore on the guy's system yesterday and it worked fine.. However, I did get a call back saying that it came back today.

Going to try to go to 4.51 to see if it happens there. If it does, then I will try 4.2x.

I am also going to e-mail Ruud directly to see if he has any insights on this.

What happened was DHCP was uninstalled/re-installed on the DC and the tokencache on the clients are messed up. I have a guy helping me with this now to verify.

Going to change the users in the domain to get the /f switch to flush this on each login.

What we have now is:
wkix32 newscript\kixtart.kx

And I will change it to:
wkix32 newscript\kixtart.kx /f

I will use the following post for the change:
GPO Change-over

Thanks,

Kent

I would not flush it on every logon. I mean just because two users had a problem...

Have not done the flush for everybody as of yet.

Here is where we are at with this. Hopefully, this will come to an end soon.

Server Names have been changed.. But, you get the idea:
Quote:

I looked at THESERVER this evening and found an overlapping DHCP scope called "BeaconIPPool" that was activated. Mark, do you remember if this was this an interim setup to fix the DHCP issue you had? I cannot remember at all. I looked through my emails that day and all I can remember/find is you calling me on 10/11 as DHCP was uninstalled from the server SERVER. I re-installed it and set it up again on SERVER the same day. I than updated all patches on both SERVER and THESERVER that evening. All I can think is that upon reboot the DHCP server scope on THESERVER started up and started the conflicts that resulted in kix issues. I released all IP addresses from the THESERVER DHCP scope, de-activated the scope and unauthorized this server from offering DHCP in the future. Can you test Kix and see if this resolves what you were seeing. Kent, thanks for all your time looking into this.

Thanks
Kirk

Ken, Kirk,

Where are we at with the Kixtart issues here in CT. Is there a plan for what to do next?

Mark Freeman

Thanks,

Kent

Very strange... a DHCP server is usually aware of others in the same subnet, and especially using the same scope. Normally you can't even set it up that way.

DHCP servers are not aware of all other DHCP servers. That is why it is so important to have rogue detection as part of an overall NMS strategy.

I really don't want to hijaak Kent's thread, but you are fixated on just Microsoft's DHCP in its newer iterations. MS does not have a monopoly on DHCP. In the real world, it could be NT4, nix/nux, Access Points or other hardware, or even end users setting up ICS.

most common "lost" DHCP servers are those tiny cheap switches that are used to replace hubs.

Well kdyer is running this script from an AD, so I simply assumed that the DHCP is on a 2000 or 2003 server, which it to 100% should be if you're running an AD

We are full 2003 Servers for DCs. In fact, we pretty close to SP-1 2003 Servers too.
